BANGKOK, July 8 (National Team) - Former Sunderland and Leeds United boss Peter Reid has been named as a leading candidate to be the new Thailand coach.

Reid and former Canada coach Holger Osieck are the front-runners to land the job, according to the president of the Football Association of Thailand, Worawi Makudi.

"We are negotiating the details with Peter Reid of England and German Holger Osieck," Worawi told the Bangkok Post.

"A deal will be finalised in a few weeks and I will formally announce who will be the new national coach."

Reid, who led Sunderland to promotion twice during a seven-year spell with the Black Cats, has not held a manager's position since leaving Coventry in January 2005.

He faces stiff competition from Osieck, who was Franz Beckenbauer's assistant during Germany's World Cup-winning campaign in 1990 and led unfancied Canada to victory in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2000.

The German also led Urawa Reds to victory in the AFC Champions League last season, but was sacked by the J.League club earlier this year after a poor start to the campaign.

He can't be any worse than the previous Muppet that they had in charge of the national team. I wonder how Reid will react to the yellow bellied players that he will inherit though. They are hardly known for their work rate and desire when the going gets tough. I still reckon the other guy Osiek will get i though, unless one of the Generals fancies a go. :o

BTW Milutinovic was their first choice, but he was too expensive.

Reid lined up for Thailand job

Peter Reid led Sunderland to promotion twice in a seven-year spell

Former Sunderland and Manchester City manager Peter Reid is set to be named as Thailand's new coach.

Thai soccer president Worawi Makudi said Reid was now the only candidate and would be offered a long-term deal to replace Charnwit Polcheewin.

Makudi said: "I'm now focused only on Peter Reid, he wants to work for us and we want him here.

"He was an excellent player and a highly qualified coach. He's dedicated and he loves our country."

Charnwit resigned after Thailand were dumped out of the 2010 World Cup qualifiers last month following an abysmal campaign, where they finished bottom of their group, losing all but one of their six matches.

Makudi added: "Peter Reid is the right man. I had a chance to consult Sir David Richards, the chairman of the Premier League, on our search for a new national coach during my overseas trip.

"He recommended Reid as a suitable choice, given his vast experience. Then, I held talks with Reid about the possibility we could work together. He didn't take much time to consider our offer because of his affection for our country."

Reid, who led Sunderland to promotion twice during a seven-year spell, has not held a manager's position since leaving Coventry in January 2005.

Thai football officials revealed 52-year-old Reid would be officially unveiled at the end of July and would sign a four-year deal.

Worawi, a Fifa executive committee member, said their plans for the 2014 World Cup began immediately after they were eliminated.

"It's our long-term plan. We need big changes right now and we don't want to make the same mistakes as before," he said.

"We can't afford to waste time. We have the talent and can go far if we are shown the right way, and Peter can do that."

Well I say best of luck to him. Hasn't got a hope with the current team. Personally I would have plumped for Davros. Turned the Kaleds into Galactic beaters. He'll know what to do with these players.

As far as I know it still hasn't been confirmed, althouigh it does appear that he will signing in the next week. On a serious note Thai football to become competative in Asia needs a dramatic overhaul in it's coaching and professional league system. At present other than Choburi, there is very little in terms of real club organisation, and the FAT is run by the usual Army and Police suspects, which as we all know means thaqt any funds that are availabe are diverted into "other projects".

Reid will certainly need to change the players mindset, and get them to adopt a more professional attitude. Winning the SEA football championship a record number of times, is the international equivalent of being the Champions of Isles of Scilly (there are only two teams). Realistic goals and targets are required along with a few more overseas players into the league mix.

In the ned, he's on a hiding to nothing.

Peter Reid to be named Thailand manager

By Graham Chase

Telegraph

Peter Reid is to be named as the new coach of Thailand next week, though he has described reports that he has already signed a four-year contract as premature.

The 52-year-old former Sunderland and Manchester City manager has held discussions with representatives of the Thailand Football Association in Manchester, and his agent is due to fly out to the Far East next week for further talks.

The Thai FA are seeking a replacement for Charnwit Polcheewin, who resigned after Thailand failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup.

Reid, who rejected the chance to manage Iran last year, has been out of football since leaving Coventry in January 2005, and has recently been working as a television pundit.

The former England midfielder travelled to Thailand six weeks ago for a coaching clinic with Ian Rush and Viv Anderson and, having given his opinion on "a nice country, lovely people and technically very good, they just have trouble converting chances", he admitted he was intrigued by the prospect of international management.

"It's a bit premature, and I haven't signed a deal, but my agent is going over there next week to see the Thai FA, hopefully to finalise things," Reid said.

"I would like to go. I've had a couple of opportunities in international football - Iran offered me a job, which I didn't take for personal reasons - but this one does interest me, it's good for the CV, and, hopefully, I can get them to the [2014] World Cup.

"There has been some interest in England, but I haven't been able to get a job. I haven't got a bad record, but nothing's happened. It looks like I'll have to go to new pastures and international football interests me. It's the highest level."

Let us hope that Reid does not fall into the trap that lead to the downfall of Peter Withe and dare to coach the players from the touchline wearing shorts. I also wonder what reaction Reid would have to his Thai players marching off the pitch if a dubious penalty is awarded against them.

Peter Reid is to be named as the new coach of Thailand's national ladyboy team next week, though he has described reports that he has already lost his trousers as premature.

The 52-year-old former Leeds and Manchester City manager has held discussions with representatives of the PDA in Bangkok, and his agent is due to catch the bus down to Pattaya next week for further talks.

The Thai LBFA are seeking a replacement for Somchaiporn Shemanawan, who screamed and threw herself off a condo after Thailand failed to qualify for the 2010 Ladyboy World Cup in Nicaragua.

Reid, who rejected the chance to manage a bar in Pattaya last year, has been out of Thailand since leaving Soi Cowboy in January 2005, and has recently been working as a crime fighting superhero in Milton Keynes.

The former England midfielder travels to Thailand every six weeks with Ian Rush and Viv Anderson and, having given his opinion on "a nice bit of skirt, the beer and the technical difficulties of speaking English as a second language", he admitted he was intrigued by the prospect of learning Thai cooking.

"F*** me! Sorry Peter Reid you have an absymal record as a manager thats why you can't get a job in the UK. Manger of the Thai National team the top level ! me thinks said after a few too many Changs.Places always seem great when you are on holidays but the reality here is until they get rid of political interference and have a properly structured national competition the Thai team will go no where. As for looking great on the CV well I would have thought that would depend on future results....chok dee.

hahaha! excellent.

reid is one of the current batch of english ex-footballers who are completely unemployable in the english league. he wants to be a tracksuit manager but thinks that wearing a suit gives an air of gravitas, a lot like sam allardyce. what they should really have concentrated on was becoming good coaches and trainers rather than managers.

When Peter Reid took over as manager of Sunderland in March 1995 they were at the wrong end of the old first division with 7 games to go and many peoples favourites for the drop. He kept them up and the following season, despite zero investment by the board, gained promotion to the Premier league. They achieved normally magical 40 points mark in the Premier league but amazingly were relegated.

After failing to win the play off final the following season they didn't dissapoint in the 1998/99 season when they finished as champions with a record 105 points and all the time playing beautiful attacking football.

The following season Sunderland were second in the Premier league at Christmas time but STILL the board didn't give Reidy the funding he needed. A HUGE blunder even by Sunderland standards.

Reidy took Sunderland to seventh position that and the following season, the highest in living memory.

During his time attendances went fron 14,000 uo to 48,000.

Had he been given the backing that other managers in the Premier were enjoying at the time who knows what heights could have been reached.

I cannot believe that there are so many people slagging him off.

I think it's a FANTASTIC appointment.

Not slagging him off, just his chances of actually doing anything with the locals here that would in someway resemble professional football on an international level.

No problem, I think that many of us are aware of the pitfulls that are awaiting him. It may all seem lovely, but sadly Thai football is riddled with the usual BS politics that we have all come to understand. Whilst there's an opportunity for administrators to make money out of the game, then Thailand will continue to flounder on the international scene. Their domination of SEA football is nothing short of a smokescreen.

:D Well of course not, the SAT and FAT, are full of genuine, honest, competent football lovers. :D

It will be interesting how much scope he wants in his remit. He's already suggested that he wants Viv Anderson as his assistant, but it looks like he's going to be told who he can have in his backroom team. I believe that General Somchai and Major Turdsak are in the running. :D

Out of interest what would his expected salary be? :o

I think a large chunck of it will be coming from the English FA. It's all about collecting votes. I understand the last guy was on around 140K Bht a month, so I am pretty sure that Reidy is going to be on a lot more than that.

Why would the English F.A. fund his salary?
