Great food, huge range of cultural activities, great golf courses, beaches, women, hotels, service. Good climate, good technology, great entertainment and nightlife, lovely people. ALL avaiable at a fraction of the cost that you would have to pay in your own country.

The night markets, the great islands that Thailand have, the service on the beaches, the smiling faces with a wild night life

Next year they can promote The Don coming to Thailand. Thailand will be clean as a whistle when I beat the mess out of everyone.

Interesting timing with this thread - I completed a TAT online survey last night. I was surprised how poorly designed it was - read like it was designed by first year uni students plus the whole focus of it was clearly on seeking justification for doing more of the same (advertising and junkets). What they should have been doing in trying to identify issues (problems or opportunities) plus elicit suggestions about how they could better market tourism to Thailand.

I know it won't happen but they need to step back and look at real on-the-ground issues with tourism here. For example reading Thaivisa accounts, tripadvisor feedback etc etc. talking to tourists in the street (I mean with real TAT staff not touts) and finding out what are the issues that make people want to come back or not come back, encourage their friends to come (or discourage them), etc.

I have written to TAT on a few occassion with contructive feedback and/or suggestions - they never write back. They should be participating in the travel forum here at TV - no way. They just want to spend money on print ads and that's the extent of it.

Do something about the theft of luggage at BKK airport? control the touts there? act as advocates for tourists who have been ripped off by hotels? Work with tourism providers to improve service standards, work with amphur officials in tourist areas to facilitate beautifcation or improvements to infrastruture, better training for staff???

This is the stuff that NTO's do in countries that are serious about growing tourism. Here I'm afraid it's all too hard. Would have to actually think and take decisive action. Someone might upset someone. Let's just ask the govt for more money to spend on advertising. Fabulous. It's just as well that it's cheap. Rant over

Thailand has doubled the amount of visitors here in the last 10 years and I'm sure it will continue on. This is in spite of or regardless of the government programs to attract tourists. Thailand attracts tourists, it sells itself, no one has to do anything. It's not the beaches, it's the people. It's the spirit of the place that catches people.

That reminds me.

They could also promote the opportunity to meet intelligent, broad minded and interesting expats in the LOS. :o

Not to mention the broad-minded and interesting expats you meet on ThaiVisa :

what most tourists think about Thailand:

Its an awesome country but there are too many creepy old guys with slave wives.

...Im not saying that their opinion is correct, but if I were in charge of the Thai Tourist Authority, I think my first priority would be to clean up Thailand's image as a place where middle aged men go to get laid, because the tourists who spend alot of money are less interested in that. That can exist like it does in HK or Singapore without being in your face and without the country being known globally for it.

Of course, lets be honest, as long as Isaanites are making 2000 baht a month, there is nothing the Tourist Authority can possibly due to clean things up or get rid of the 'slave wives'.

"Thailand, where for enough money literally ANYTHING goes...."

Actually, that's Mexico's tourist slogan minus the "for enough money." The "for enough money" makes it too vague confusing for tourists. You could say it's true anywhere if you have enough money.

Sorry, but I just can't see Pattaya as anything but a karmically evil place. Maybe good for a halloween ride.
