I not tired, but I want to sleep {another yawn} ME - But if you want to sleep it is because you're tired... GF - No, I not tired... but my eye cannot stay open ME - Ah.. if your eyes want to close it means you're tired.. GF - No, I not tired...I just want to sleep... ME - Ok....... November 8, 200421 yr It's an idea.... not sure about the internet connection where she lives though (near Kalasin ), I'll research when I'm there. totster I tried the same with my GF. No interest whatsoever. Handling the remote of the tv is ok but computers is out of bounds.
November 8, 200421 yr Author I tried the same with my GF. No interest whatsoever. Handling the remote of the tv is ok but computers is out of bounds. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well... if I can get a decent connection where she is ( Which is unlikely unless I want to shell out for Satellite ) then I'll put it to her.... she did express a desire to learn about computers before... so we'll see totster

My GF always wanted to drive a car so I send her to some driving school a couple a years back while we were in Pattaya. That worked out allright. She get her license and felt quite proud about it too.
November 8, 200421 yr maybe she is associating "tired" with "bored" or something similar. Don't worry too much dude, I am married to my thai girl and we have kids, however I still work away so I have heard it all. We have eventually worked the language problems out. Now we just say we love each other and talk about how my family is. Good luck pal. All is well. tukyleith

November 8, 200421 yr Author If she wants to sleep, but she's not tired and sighs ...doesn't that tell you something? *hint hint* <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's definately a yawn... she even says " now I yawning " in the voice that can only be when you are yawning... maybe she is associating "tired" with "bored" or something similar. I know she is genuinely tired... but for some reason I can't get her to realise that when you want to sleep it's the same as being tired... When i explain it too her she says something like " No... I want to sleep.. not same like tired..." maybe she is associating "tired" with "bored" or something similar. I think this is the most likely explanation... totster
November 8, 200421 yr I just looked in a dictionary and against "tired" it had "nuai" - which I knows means "muscle-tired". Like when my g/f sees a group of crazy cyclists pedalling up the mountain roads around Phuket, she'll say "nuai mai?" as we drive past But "sleepy" is "hiu non" in Isaan which means "hungry for sleep". So I think your g/f thinks you are asking her if she is "muscle-tired", as if she's been working hard, whereas you are really asking her if she is sleepy.
November 8, 200421 yr My wife ( Thai ) just went to bed, to do one of the things Thai women are best at, it's either eating, talking, watching tv or sleeping, that's Thai girls.

November 9, 200421 yr I must be missing something.. totster <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I don't know really. Does this happen before you make love or after? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hmmm... I believe it can be loosely translated as "I don't want to talk to you right now".
November 9, 200421 yr She is Thai, nothing more to it. Get used to it or spend the rest of your life trying to work out what she is meaning to say.
November 9, 200421 yr Same here , when my wife starts to explain a funny story that happened to her that day she starts like: this man he go woman, talking, sleeping, but not right now. Then baby cry no sleep, tv on, bad movie, bought some mushroom And you go : What the .... Seams pretty logical in her brain though just doesn't come out like that.

RDN is right but just to add, for non Issan speakers, "sleepy" in central thai is "ngoung non", try saying it after a few beers Cheers RC <{POST_SNAPBACK}> RC - at the same time she also explained this can also be used as well as hiu non ( in fact if you hadn't posted it I would have asked about it).... but after me attempting both, she decided I can say hiu non better than ngoung non ! Thanks all for the input totster
November 9, 200421 yr She is Thai, nothing more to it. Get used to it or spend the rest of your life trying to work out what she is meaning to say. Shes also a woman. They look cute but are wired wrong. What they say one day doesnt mean the same the next.. Gave up a long time ago trying to work chicks out.

As the saying goes "women are meant to be loved; not understood.
November 9, 200421 yr Well, with this kind of thinking, it's not surprising that many of you end up with women that don't make much sense.

I'm not sure of the tone of the first word. Could it be a blend of what in Standard Thai are หิว [R]hiu and ง่วง [F]nguang? (It would make sense as a dialect variation if the etymologically correct spelling were หง้วง, but I've no evidence that the standard spelling is unetymological and have some very shaky evidence that it is etymological.)
