Every now and then I have been having the same conversation with my GF for a couple of months...

Everynight before she goes to bed she calls me to say goodnight etc....

Sometimes the conversation will at some point go like this..

GF - Now I want to sleeeeeep {slight pause with a yawn}

ME - Oh... I can hear you yawn, I think you're tired

GF - Nooo... I not tired, but I want to sleep {another yawn}

ME - But if you want to sleep it is because you're tired...

GF - No, I not tired... but my eye cannot stay open

ME - Ah.. if your eyes want to close it means you're tired..

GF - No, I not tired...I just want to sleep...

ME - Ok.......

We have eventually worked the language problems out. Now we just say we love each other and talk about how my family is.

When i explain it too her she says something like " No... I want to sleep.. not same like tired..."

But "sleepy" is "hiu non" in Isaan which means "hungry for sleep".

So I think your g/f thinks you are asking her if she is "muscle-tired", as if she's been working hard, whereas you are really asking her if she is sleepy.

Hmmm... I believe it can be loosely translated as "I don't want to talk to you right now".

She is Thai, nothing more to it. Get used to it or spend the rest of your life trying to work out what she is meaning to say.

Same here , when my wife starts to explain a funny story that happened to her that day she starts like:

this man he go woman, talking, sleeping, but not right now. Then baby cry no sleep, tv on, bad movie, bought some mushroom

And you go : What the ....

Seams pretty logical in her brain though just doesn't come out like that.

After talking to my GF today I can confirm this is exactly what the problem was... thanks again for explaning it.

RC - at the same time she also explained this can also be used as well as hiu non ( in fact if you hadn't posted it I would have asked about it).... but after me attempting both, she decided I can say hiu non better than ngoung non !

I'm sure I've heard my wife, who's from the North, say 'huang [M]non'. I'm not sure of the tone of the first word. Could it be a blend of what in Standard Thai are หิว [R]hiu and ง่วง [F]nguang? (It would make sense as a dialect variation if the etymologically correct spelling were หง้วง, but I've no evidence that the standard spelling is unetymological and have some very shaky evidence that it is etymological.)
