generally, the males living in rural regions tend to be a bit rough and perhaps less educated than those in urban areas and many have alcohol problems as there is not a whole lot to do in rural areas. add to the equation that most attractive women tend to leave the rural regions for work and it would seem to me, that perhaps there is a very high risk of rape for young women living in these areas. i visited isaan recently with a friend and went to his wife's villiage and i have to admit, that was the first thing which popped into my mind when i met her nieces, who were a couple of very sweet 15 year olds. The people in this village lived rather roughly, and these two girls sort of glowed like diamonds in the rough. It gave me an uneasy feeling to be honest, when it comes to the 'uncles, cousins, neighbors, family friends, etc'... I really hope that is not the case...

So you visit isaan, see someones nieces, and think they will be raped??

Sorry, i donot know where you come from or what you are used to, but it is not the thing which i would be thinking about, and what would make me feel "uneasy".

when i look at what all the men around them look like, the lives they lead, and the amount of alcohol they consume, yes, that was one of the the things that immediately popped into my mind, that it must be very unsafe to be an attractive 16 year old girl in Issaan.

If they made to 16 without being raped then they are probably okay.

I would think Thailand in this regard would be like any small town, hamlet, or village anywhere in the world. From what I read about abuse in regard to young people, many cases are attributed to a close aquaintence or a family member, so I do not see the small village being a contributing factor. Due to everyone knowing everything about every one in the small villages I would think abuse incidents would be rare. Some one out there probably has some educated imput they could give on this.

I guess they'd be a lot better in town being looked after one of the many high class Farang's that Thailand attracts.

Can't have them living rough with their own families and in their own communities can we?!

It was only last year that rape laws here were amended to include spousal rape.

That would be nice except it's not uncommon for a 16 year old to get raped (and impregnated) by her boyfriend to force her to marry him.

Maybe they should change it to pre-spousal rape. :o

I didn't want to appear too negative.

My guess would be that rates of unreported rape might indeed be quite high here, because of attitudes reflected in the fact that this change to the law did not occur until last year. Obviously, there are no statistics on this.

Wow what a trollish post! I live in issan with my wife and son and to pigeon whole the male population of issan with your absurd stereotypical comment- "rough looking males living in those areas are less educated and have alcohol problems and add to the fact that there is not a whole lot to do in rural areas then one can assume that there is a higher risk of rape when it comes to uncles, cousins, neighbors, family friends, etc.?" Maybe it is you who needs to be educated!
