Leaving a passport is plain stupid, if you do you leave yourself open to abuse from the dodgy operators. Plus Identity Theft is Huge in this part of the world.

Besides the embassey and Immigration do not care you have it if a bike is smashed, they can and do just issue a new temp one.If they suspect your identy has been compromised, as is the case when its left at an unathorised place they have the obligation to replace it.

I understand some operators including those on here state its a must do as you get ripped off,but bottom line if you cant accept the nature of the business why get involved.

On another note a friend of mine in phuket recently had a 140,000 bht med bill knocked back by Insurance as the bike renter did not have a tourism liscence or legal docs to rent bikes.

ORANGE AND WHITE HONDA CLICK MISSING

My pal rents bikes he's honest and genuine. he takes a passport as deposit as his bikes are new and a 3000 baht deposit will not cover its value.

only over the last few days a tourist has gotten so drunk he forgot where he parked the bike, now 3000 baht deposit would have been no good, and a copy of passport useless.

the bike has been reported missing at the police station.

anyone coming across an orange and white honda click reg No 211 or 122 (about 1000km on it) the hirer is happy to pay finder a 2000 baht fee rather than pay its full value to the owner. the bike has a monks ribbon around the front from being blessed. there is possibly a helmet hanging on the rear of the seat.

Both hirer and owner would appreciate any help, the hirer's No is on the front of the bike

The British Foreign Office states very clearly to all people travelling , NOT to part with their passports or use them as deposits.

Passports belong to the issuing government & not the individual. We had that debate earlier & I'm just clarifying the written advice.

GOOD NEWS >>>>> THE CLICK HAS BEEN RECOVERED

The tourist must have finally remembered where he left it. ;)

Should have left it at home. Alcohol and motorbikes are a dangerous mix. :(

Quite often in Chaweng, during the course cof an evening bikes are moved a short distance, I pissed hirer immediately thinks it's been stolen then usually goes back the next day sober and its somehow "returned".

Most of us wouldn't be dumb enough to leave a pair of flip flops for five minutes in Green Mango late at night. ;)

yes i beleive this is possible. for this reason i think that when i rented a motor bike to a mate of mine which was stolen. that he did not want to pay me the money becuase he thought that i nicked it.

first of all obvioulsy to me it isn't true. second of all. if you take care of your rented bike and do not leave it parked in the strreet for a ew weeks and leave the key with someone else. The u r probably less likely to have it nicked.

he left it round someone elses shop. let anyone use it which means that anyone could have cut a key in this time. mean while i am left without a bike.

for some reason when i lost my temper because i made no contract no passport to secure the bike and he was spending 10 000 baht per night for about 3 months.

My other so called mates stopped talking to me becuase i though i was in the right to lose my temper and nearly smack in in the head.

though all this business is clear now and in the past but renting bikes can be just as much of a head ache for the leasee and the leaser.

Both can or cannot be corrupt. my advise is. if you are worried then don't rent one. if u do rent one the just look after it. for example if there is a cctv camera in your resorte then park it under the camera. always double lock it and rememeber it isn't your bike so if something happens when u rent it. even if it is not your fault then the owner wants the same bike that he rented out.

as for getting it fixed by your own company.

Rememeber the business is a business and the owner has the right to mmake a profit on your mistakes. if you don't make any mistakes then there will be no profit also you want to make sure that the bike is fied properly and not just patched up so that the owner cannot see the real damage.

from now on i treat every customer and mate the same. i will help them out if they have a crash as long as they are not drunk

yes this is true but from the leasee point of view it is the only way to stop the other person crashing the bike and leaving.

just wondering. is it illegal to receive a passport as deposit.

Good question! A passport belongs to the government that issued it - not the holder. Technically the person handing over the passport is giving away property that does not belong to him/her. If anyone is going to get caught for doing something illegal, then it is the person who gave up their passport. Your passport is probably the most important piece of identification you can ever have; I would never hand it over to anyone.:D

Her Thai friends told us that except the books and the insurance we've got we don't need nothing else! is it true?

I am sure there many people on here that have bike rentals & can help you.

yep cheers

basically it is up to the leasee. either leave the bike leave a deposit the same vaue as the bike or just get around on taxis.

people don't have to give there passport but then they don't have to rent bikes.

giving passport does not only apply in bike rentals.

sometimes in hotel i have had to leave my passport also what about the thai police do they have the right to seize your passport and private hospitals and in some countries like dubi i have herd that for thai working over there. the police take your passport on arrival.

so if someone takes your passport without permission then they are steaing govment property ?

If a British subject surrenders their passport i believe i am right in saying they have committed an offence.

if u surrender it does that mean that u are a trator and can be tried for treason ?

I would never leave my passport ... they can have my drivers licence or a cash deposit ,

You can always go elsewhere if they demand your passport !!

i would always demand a pasport or cash for what the bike is worth.

i might not be the most proffesionaly way of people smashing up your belongings and leaving for good but this is thailand and it is hard enough to make a living out here as it is with out having to be a big multy corperation like budget cars just to rent out a vechele.

what is a driving liscece going to gurantee the renter.

i try to play buy tht rules. basically i want my bike back the same way i rented it. my prices are my prices. i might charge more if it is smashed up. i look at how my bike was respected. if it was left parked pout in the street for 2 weeks and got smashed by a car i would get all i can get. if someone is unlucky and had an accident and is in hosipital then the last thing i would do is rip them off.

i would try to come to some agreement and even take a lose if it was truely noot the rentees fault.

basically if the customer takes the piss then so do i. if they don;t then neither do i.

then they can always go somewhere else. i would rarther lose a customer than lose a bike.
