My wife just got a phone call from her mother in Bangkok. There are more and more rumours about floodings in Bangkok.

Anybody has information about issue?

Please inform?

I don't think that it is anything to get to concerned about. It is the rainy season, so it rains almost everyday here. Flooding is normal this time of year. :o

Believe that "rumor" may be a misunderstanding in response to a storm surge assessment recently made that high tides and storm surge could cause flooding at end of August. We have not even had any heavy rains recently here in Bangkok.

Yes it is......

Oh sorry I misread the title of the post.

I thought is said, 'Is Bangkok a disaster.' :o

If anything the opposite, this is the first time for 14 years our Soi has not flooded as normal.

Good job I live on the ninth floor then, but it's surely about time I learnt to swim.

I think this is a recurring fear driven by the fact that Bangkok does sit below sea level I think, and much of it,eg, Lad Phrao was built on bog land; which is a surprise isn't it?

In the early 90s Bangkok would regularly be thigh deep in water throughout the city. I don't know what they did to improve drainage but they did a fantastic job.

A major expat topic of conversation used to be about avoiding live electrical wires while wading and making sure you didn't get sucked down an open storm drain you couldn't see under 3 feet of muddy water

Funny.

That is one funny face, too.

If there is it should be relatively minor flooding.

Usually, the excess water from the rivers are lead out to cities surrounding Bangkok.

Usually the flooding occurs in September or early October. But this year is (at least in the central region) not unusual wet, rather average so far. Only the NE go heavy rain and the Mekong at it's highest level in 30 yrs.

Why am I getting a bad feeling that the lack of precipiation will be compensated for by a wetter than usual Sept-November. :o

Flooding happens every year. Some years have seemed worse or better than others.

If the sinking problem of BKK becomes an issue it will be a couple of decades or more down the road.
