Looking For An Avocado Tree.

Hi all.

Does anyone know where I can find an avocado tree?? I just returned from Chiang Mai where the avocado was in season. YUM :D

I bought two, 4 year old trees and at the airport had to leave them behind. :o The only company that did not take any roots on board was Air Asia and we flew with them off course!

I'm also wondering if they would be succesfull here in Phuket and do I need to get one that is grafted? Or do the still produce yummy fruits, if one grows one from seeds? (When they are good they are very, very good, when they are bad they are horrid!!)

Please help, I have cravings again!

You could try the garden big garden centre on the Chao Fa West Road, left hand side from Chalong, right at the traffic lights before the road sweeps up to Central. If they don't have them no one will. And if you mention you bought some 4 year old trees in Chiang Mai, they'll probably source them for you. There was at least one Thai man featured in the Gazette some years ago now who was successfully gowing them in Kata, so they do grow here. Other than that, they're very easy to grow from seed. Just put the stone blunt side up atop a jar or decent sized bottle with water of course, in a shaded place until the roots appear. Good luck. I love them too and the price of them here is outrageous, considering Bali has them for the same price as papaya here.

I've never seen one growing or for sale in our area. (Krabi) We have them in our Florida farm where we have a sandy soil and all were grafted.

Avocado trees are growing on the north end of the island by a lady who runs a cooking school down town. I believe her name is Kathy. There are two different locations. Sorry I can not give you the details.

You are correct if you start from seeds you have to graft from a producing tree. I purchase a lot of avocados each year to make guacomle and freeze to sell. In Chiang Rai I have about 30 trees and will start to graft next week.

Best wishes and good luck.

I was told that to have producing trees they need to pollinate, is that correct ??

Kind of negates having just one tree... Having moved a few times I am not going to go to the effort of growing on in a rental place but should I make a place permanent this would be definitely on my wishlist.

...

There are a few self-pollinating varieties, so if only planting one tree, make sure you select one of these.

I had an entirely different problem with a tree in California. After 8 years, not a single flower even though the tree was otherwise healthy and growing by leaps and bounds. no flowers -> no fruit.

I got a wee little stick of a tree from that guy in Kata 5 years ago, stuck it in the ground beside my house and watched it grow into a 2-storey-high beauty. About 6 months ago, for the first time, it was laden with yummy avocado. Would love to get another one, but unfortunately I cannot find this place in Kata now -- I think it's no longer around. And I have had no luck with the seeds, either, and now the tree's finished bearing fruit for the season....bummer.

Thanks a lot Don.

Is there anyone out there who can get me in touch with Kathy, the avocadotree grower? Or could you, Don post me some grafted trees from Chiang Rai? Or bring some with you to sell? Any idea what that would cost? Would there be anyone else interested in buying some?

Now I know I need more then one (or one polunated one. Do they not need to be polunated every year again tho?) and they have to be grafted.

MMMH Help!

Any body else out there who knows how I can get some?

Make sure that you have have more than 1 tree. Generally they are self pollinating.

The trees grow fast and to a large size. They should be planted at minimum of 4 meters apart. They need to be watered and fertilized. They also like full sun.

I belive you have seen my note on grafting vs growing from seeds. The jury is still out on this one so I will try both ways.

Probably next year I will have rootings for those who wish to try.

Don..

Don't want to start anything...but everything I know and read about avocado trees states that they are not self pollinating...As a matter of fact, you need an "A" variety and a "B" variety in order to produce...Avocado trees are either male in the morning and female in the afternoon or vice versa, depending on whether they are A or B variety... Also bees are very important in the pollinating of avocado trees...

I will certainly buy a few grafted small trees. I have located a place in Pak Chong who sells, but they are not interested in shipping. That is a little far for a road trip, but i may be up that way next spring. I have 4 very nice tress grown from seeds, but as mentioned in other posts they are very delicate. In the past i have had two trees just suddenly turn brown and die in the space of a week.
