Does anyone know which pier in BKK should I get to sample cruise dinner ? How much does it cost ? Do they serve Thai or Western food ?

Thinking of going on my own instead of joining those expensive day tours.

River City Pier, near the Royal Orchid Sheraton.

However, you will actually pay the same, if not more, at the pier. With a "tour" you will get shuttle service as well if your hotel is in one of the areas they cover.

You should pay no more than 1200 baht per person. Food is international and changes from day to day.

This is the best : http://www.manohracruises.com/

Catch the skytrain to Saphan Taksin station, get off and walk down the stairs to the adjacent river pier...at the pier catch the free shuttle boat to JW Marriot Hotel.

There are other mid-range bulk tourist river cruises too, but nothing in the league of the Manohra.

Don't confuse the Marriot Resort Hotel at 257 Charoennarkorn Road with the JW Marriot Hotel which is on Sukhumvit Road.

hence my precise instructions. the shuttle boat at Saphan Taksin ONLY goes to JW Marriot riverside.

You are confusing the names of two different hotels. I was pointing out that the shuttle from Saphan Taksin goes to the Bangkok Marriott Resort and Spa on the Chao Praya river Link to Marriott Resort and NOT the JW Marriot hotel. There is only one JW Marriott in Bangkok and it is on Sukhumvit. JW Marriott link

Aside from the above -- one little thing I've noticed on several of these cruises is that the Thais run straight for the food once they're on the boat. The idea of a leisurely cruise while you eat never seems to cross their minds.

The downside of this is that if you don't follow their lead, there will be nothing left by the time the boat finally pushes off. Many people are nearly finished eating by the time the boat leaves the pier.
