On NBT, Pallop confirms that if Chamlong is arrested, he will take Chamlong's place.

If this is confirmed it raises the stakes immeasurably. To date the involvement of powerful military figures has been very limited at PAD rallies. This guy even though retired is powerful.

Pallop Pinmanee

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

For those who are not familiar with this "gentle man":

It would seem he is someone to reckon with. :o

General Pallop Pinmanee (Thai: พัลลภ ปิ่นมณี) is a former Thai commando and assassin who took part in several coups, ordered the massacre of insurgents at Krue Sae Mosque, and allegedly played a role in the attempted car bomb assassination of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. As of May 2007, he was appointed the public relations advisor for the Internal Security Operations Command of Thailand.

Pallop graduated from Class 7 of the Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy, the so called "Young Turks". He began his career as a commando and self-professed assassin.[1] With his Young Turk classmates, he was involved in military coups against the governments of Seni Pramoj, Tanin Kraivixien, and the unsuccessful 1981 coup against the government of Prem Tinsulanonda. He admitted to being the mastermind behind a series of assassination attempts against General Arthit Kamlang-ek, commander of the Army under Prem. Pallop was later rehabilitated and retired from the Royal Thai Army with the rank of full general in 1996, but was later appointed deputy director-general of the Internal Security Operations Command. It was under this position that he ordered military forces to storm Krue Sae Mosque in a tense stand-off with Southern insurgents. Dozens of insurgents died in the controversial move.

Later, Pallop's driver was found driving around the residence of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in a car containing 67 kilograms of explosives. He was immediately dismissed from his position. After the Thaksin government was deposed in a military coup, the junta appointed Pallop public relations adviser of ISOC. Pallop is married to Khunying Naruedee Pinmanee.[2] He has a son and two daughters.

He was the one who ordered the crackdown at Krue Se Mosque. And his driver was arrested with 67 kg of explosives found in his car - driving around near Thaksin's residence.

Pallop is a staunch anti-Thaksin critic and a close friend of Chamlong - so as you have pointed out - this has raised the stakes immeasurably.

Very messy as he will have friends in the military. Rumours that the use of troops is something Samak wants to avoid because he doesnt know who is controlling them look increasingly and worryingly accurate. The police and military divide comes up to. It is very hard for the police to arrest a soldier of any rank. If Gen. Pallop is parading around government house it just complicated any arrest strategy.

Lets hope that it is meant just as a show of support for an old friend rather than anything more sinister. This could still be negotiated down to its previous level but time is running out. Maybe dropping the somewhat ludicrous treason charges and replacing them with criminal charges of a severe level would be a way to go. Treason charges are things best not used in this day and age

A show of support is one thing.

A public declaration that he will immediately replace Chamlong (should he be arrested) is a bit more than just a show of support, I think.

PM calls off plans to disperse demonstrators

Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej has abandoned plans to disperse congregation of the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) in an effort to avoid possible confrontation between protestors and police officers at the Government House.

The premier mentioned he did not lose credibility for calling off the plan to chase protestors away, adding that his action aimed at preventing serious encounters.

At the same time, appointed Senator Warin Thiamcharas (วรินทร์ เทียมจรัส) personally viewed that the recent arrest warrants for core PAD leaders is too much. He added that PAD core leaders’ allegation of state rebellion leveled against them was not precise as they did not adopt a conduct to topple the Government or abolish major national institutions, which would have resulted in the destruction of state sovereignty.

Senator Warin claimed if accusations failed, PAD core leaders would likely sue the premier. At the same time, Bangkok Senator Rasana Tositrakul (รสนา โตสิตระกูล) called for the withdrawal of state rebellion accusations from the Royal Thai Police who received the case as the move is not in compliance with the constitution.

[The PAD movement started 3 month ago, because the government wanted to change that parts in the constitution which shall prevent vote buying.

You mean Article 309 which includes a wide-reaching amnesty and approval for the main participants in the 2006 coup.

Obviously this is crucial to Thailand's democracy and explains why PAD - whose actions may appear to be those of left-wing nuts- must stage its protests against any move to change the constituition.

In case you didn't know, this wonderful, democratic constitution was authored by the coup leaders after they took power - using their military force.

I say protect article 309 at any price. That is the cost of democracy! Join PAD now! And please remember that PPP never had any votes as the election was rigged. Hail to PAD.

And support Chamlong by joing Santi Asoke Cult too, if you want to be a non-smoking, vegetarian, celibate good Man, like him..

It occurs to me that if PAD prevails and goes through with the military appointed government plan that Sondhi described to CNN, then Bangkok must remain under martial law indefinitely. The current government is recognized world wide as the legitimate government (rightly or wrongly). Another government appointed by the military will once again be condemned by the international community and cause further loss of foreign investments and export opportunities. I also fear that this type of demonstration targeted against a government appointed by the military, would not be treated so delicately.

Would not it be more practical for the protesters to be demanding improved voting procedures to prevent vote buying? I think in most countries, SECRET BALLOT kills the incentive to pay people for their vote. The protesters seem convinced that they would win in a fair election, so it seems their efforts would best be directed at ensuring fair elections.

The PAD movement started 3 month ago, because the government wanted to change that parts in the constitution which shall prevent vote buying. Did you follow that.....party get dissolved--no problem we have 2 new parties standby (they can change party easily)....Premier or Minister get kicked by the court....no problem just re-elect him....

So PAD is trying what you suggest, just their target is to keep/protect the current laws. There is no way PPP would ever change the laws to be harder....

Sorry. I don't understand. PAD is trying to keep the current laws that resulted in the vote buying?

By the way, does the PAD still have women and children positioned at the gates of Government House to receive the brunt of a police charge?

The current laws (which are far from being good enough) have as punishment for vote buying, that the complete party can be dissolved.

PPP and other parties are on the way to get dissolved because of vote buying. That's the main reason the government wanted to change the constitution.

The government want to change the laws to almost no punishment for vote buying while the PAD wants to keep these too weak laws as the they are better than no punishment at all.

(not sure if that's understandable in my poor english)

Thai protesters defy court order to leave compound By SUTIN WANNABOVORN, Associated Press Writer

BANGKOK, Thailand - Demonstrators armed with golf clubs, batons and bamboo sticks defied a court order to end their occupation of the prime minister's office compound on Thursday, vowing to remain until the country's leaders resign.

Dozens of members of the People's Alliance for Democracy wielded the makeshift weapons as they stood guard around the compound's perimeter. Protesters locked the gates and built barriers in anticipation of a possible police raid.

The group's leaders said they have a legal right to protest there.

"The PAD is not doing anything wrong," said Chamlong Srimuang, one of the leaders, referring to the initials of the alliance. "We are staging a protest because the government has made too many mistakes and has no legitimacy to run the country."

The alliance wants to force the government of Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej to step down, accusing it of corruption and of serving as a proxy for former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a 2006 coup and faces several corruption cases.

Late Wednesday, Bangkok Civil Court issued a ruling ordering the alliance to leave the government compound and stop blocking public streets. The Criminal Court also issued warrants for the arrest of the nine alliance leaders on charges of insurrection, conspiracy, illegal assembly and refusing orders to disperse.

Insurrection, which is the legal equivalent of treason, carries a maximum penalty of death or life imprisonment.

Thousands of supporters poured into the grounds in response, and many formed a human chain overnight around the group's top leaders to prevent them from being taken away.

Samak and police officials have repeatedly said the 1,000 police officers would not use force to evict the protesters, who have occupied the compound since Tuesday. He and other government officials have encouraged demonstrators to leave voluntarily, even offering free bus trips back to the provinces.

"Police will use a softened stance to deal with the protesters," Police Lt. Gen. Suraphol Thuanthong. "We will give them time to leave the government house. But if they continue to defy the court order, then we have to use force to drive them out. I cannot set the precise time or deadline for this."

Samak initially said he had hoped the protesters would be out before a ceremony Saturday for Thailand's royal family. But he announced Thursday that he has proposed moving the ceremony to another site.

Alliance leaders said the group planned to appeal the court order requiring the group to leave the government compound arguing they have a legal right to remain on the site.

But Chamlong also said he and other leaders were ready to be arrested, though they encouraged supporters to remain on the grounds.

"If we get arrested, please don't follow us to the detention center," said Chamlong said. "You must remain here and continue fighting. If you leave the government house, that means we have been defeated."

Samak, who refused to resign, said Tuesday that the protesters were trying to provoke the military.

Inside the compound, the number of protesters has risen from a few thousand to as many as 10,000, and many more appeared to be on streets outside. Bags of trash were piling up, protesters hung laundry from buildings and toilets were in short supply.

After Thaksin was deposed in the bloodless coup, his party was dissolved and he was banned from public office until 2012.

But Samak led Thaksin's political allies to a December 2007 election victory, and their assumption of power triggered fears that Thaksin would make a political comeback. He remains popular with the country's rural majority.

Thaksin has sought refuge in Britain, claiming he would not get a fair trial in Thailand.

PPP MP deplores senators for siding with PAD

Certain senators might have committed contempt to the judiciary by showing moral support to the People's Alliance for Democracy inspite of its defiance for arrest warrants and eviction order, People Power Party MP Wisut Chainarun on Thursday.

Wisut was reacting to the news that 10 senators paid a visit to the PAD's rally inside Government House and that some 30 senators cast doubts on treason charges filed agianst the nine PAD leaders.

"These senators have been the advocates for the judicial review but are acting curiously when the PAD is being targetted for the judicial proceedings," he said.

From the BKK Post article where Panlop denied he was behind the PAD;

"He admitted he had close ties with Chamlong Srimuang, a PAD leader, but said they had different methods of pursuing their causes.

Maj-Gen Chamlong embraced ''ahimsa'', or the principle of non-violence, in fighting the government while he had less patience than the PAD core leader, Gen Panlop said."

I though he had said he had no plans to clear people. This gets more worrying by the minute.

First the PM says he wont use force. Then the military call for no use of force, and then the PM cancels plans to use force. And in the midst of it all we have a veritable hardcase about to take over the command of the PAD.

Yes. I understand now. Your English is good, no problem. But, I hate to see another military government. The last one was TERRIBLE. How is it they have enough power to change governments but not enough power to stop the constitution from being changed? They should just tell PPP that if they change the constitution then they will take over the government. That way they don't look so bad.

We'd still have Kings of France,

So you think violent rebellion to overthrow the aristrocracy - beheadings by the hundred- was something good? Have you actually studied the French Revolution.

If you must quote me,

please do it in the context of the post I was ridiculing.

I have lived in France for 10 years and was friends with 2-3 historians there.

How could I agree that the way things were done there in 1789–1799 was right.

Impossible!

But starving the people through institutionalized graft greatly caused the

problem there, the solution in the end was worse than a cure would have been.

That was not the point.

The point was not being sheep and getting fleeced by entrenched institutionalized graft.

But taking the phrase out of context allows it to be twisted.

Maybe the French analogy wasn't the best one.

Of course you are ignoring the USA reference

and especially the India one referencing Ghandi

and peaceful civil disobediance vs incompetent governance.

England still has a queen, but cleaned up the system too.

So don't even TRY to imply what I think you're aiming at.

Police organize free transport for PAD demonstrators who wish to return home

Deputy Spokesman for the National Police, Police Major General Surapol Tuanthong stated that the National Police have organized 110 buses and vans to facilitate citizens joining in the People's Alliance for Democracy who may wish to return home. The transport is free of charge

police must uphold their duty to the law and will take action against anyone who infringes upon it

Realizing it's not quite Ramadan just yet and that most attendees haven't been fasting (thus diverting a ready explanation), but as part of this "free transportation" offer the government is making, are there any cord-stacking trucks included?

post-9005-1219903002_thumb.jpg

How very prophetic, SJ.

Now that ex-General Pallop Pinmanee, the soldier who ordered the massacre of insurgents at Krue Sae Mosque is chosen to be the new leader of PAD, those bodybags may come in useful after all.

Surely, no sane person could countenance following a PAD led by this blood-stained, self professed killer!

You see, politics and history are rarely black and white. I doubt if any of those critical of PAD on this forum couldn't draw up a list of actions taken by Thaksin, his family and his government that they don't totally disagree with, but (especially after this appointment) to see PAD as some kind of saviours, pure as the driven snow, is to see them through very rose-coloured spectacles indeed!

It is not a secret that PPP is paying foreigner to make postings. you also see many new members who only post anti-pad

there is actually an office out of Hong Kong that employs deadbeat enligsh teachers and english speakng chinese to spend all day trolling on comments and forums about Tibet, Taiwan and other CCP projects. I met a brit in a bar in HK last month who got drunk enough to tell me what he did. He said also they had numerous proxies that they used. they have google alerts set for a number of terms such as "free tibet" "Taiwan Independence" and so on - so whenever anybody writes on of these terms, they check out the site and then sometimes refute with comments.

this same office is hired by Thaksins groups to clean up the wikipedia articles and troll the forums including this one.

this is quite common and normal warfare. done by the cia, the kgb, the infamous nazi goebbels. desinformation, propaganda and even simple joking to scare serious users away. tax-sin has proven to be a master in this profession and he has enough money and reason to use it. some of their tricks can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda

Don't for one moment assume they have suddenly arrived, they have been there all along but identities are only just being revealed.
