Brian,

One of the most scenic routes would be to take the route down from Chiang rai through Phayao, Ngao, Den Chai, Prae etc. Takinig this route and (I think) just past Uttaradit there is a turning on the left that is signposted to Chatragarn National Park, you would end up going through the town of Nakorn Thai, and Lomsak prior to meeting up with Route 12 just west of Petchabun. It is very scenic and traffic is usually quite light.

Enjoy your trip

Agree with AjarnP. That trip down through Phrae is beautiful. Stop for some roast chicken at the scenic overlook north of Phrae.

One option on the road home is Petchabun. It's about 35k(?) or so off the road to KK, but a nice little town. Kosit Hill (on the left as you enter town) is a great little hotel. And their coffee shop is one of the most relaxing places I have found.

If you take Hwy 1 south from Chiang Rai and are going into Lampang be sure to stop at the Pha Thai Cave, 15 km south of Ngao. It's not really a cave but a huge overhang that still has the red dye hand prints and primitive drawings on the wall. It's on the southbound side. Look for the big parking area, spirit houses and vendors. The cave is a short walk from where you park. Overnight in Lampang or Phrae (21 km north of Den Chai). I've also done Phayao, Nan, Phrae as part of a trip into that area but it will take more time. Nan has a nice hotel right in the middle of the city.
