Recommended Posts

I am planning to go to Chiang Rai mid January for a visa run to Mai Sai and would appreciate any up to date information on the situation at the Thai/Myanmar border also availability & costs of taxi/mini bus from Chiang Rai to Mai Sai.

Are you doing a visa rune, or do you intend to spend time in Chiang Rai?

If you are travelling by bus, many companies will take you all the way to Mae Sai, so no need to get off at Chiang Rai.

Don't know about Taxis or minibuses, But are very regular ordinary buses to Mae Sai, 90 minute trip for 25Baht. Air con buses, less regular, about 45Baht for 1 hour trip. From Mae Sai bus station jump straight on to waiting pick-up bus, will take you to the border for 5 Baht. No need to stop at the immigration office nowadays, can sort everything at the border.

Remember you need may to be able to show 20,000 baht cash.

I am planning to spend a couple of days in Chiang Rai and cross the border to renew my multi-entry “O” visa, do a bit of shopping and cross back same day.

What’s this about the 20,000 baht cash, I have never been asked for this on previous border crossings, is this a new rule? :o

You might not be asked but it is more common now and especially at that crossing.

Non Immigrant Visa para 2.1 of http://www.mfa.go.th/web/12.php

Evidence of adequate finance ( 20,000 Baht per person and 40,000 Baht per family )
