Fishing Reel

My (Thai) sister in law enjoys river fishing and has hinted that she would like a new reel. I will be visisitng soon from the UK. Is there anything to gain by buying one in the UK for her? Are the better brands cheaper in the UK? Whether I buy in UK or Thailand, what is a good brand cause I know nothing about fishing?

Fishing is very popular in Thailand and there are many fishing tackle shops.

Few carry the more expensive brands like Mitchell and ABU, or at least I've never seen them.

My advice would be to take Sis into town when you get here and let her pick out what she wants.

Most of the better tackle shops carry top brand reels like Shimano ABU and such at considerably cheaper prices than in the west.

Thanks for the replies. I'm likely to be staying in east Bangkok, near the Mall Bangkapi. They probably have reels in the dept. store there as I remember they have a large sports section, but are there any specialist fishing shops near that area? Does the reel need to match the rod or are they all interchangeable?

Hi eastender,

If you really want to treat your sister in law, take her to Bung Sam Lan fishing park for the day.

I just took my neice and my sister for a days unforgettable fishing.

In five hours, we caught:

3 X 30kg Catfish

8 X 20kg Catfish

4 X 10kg Catfish

The cost to hire Tackle, Bait, Guide and a large fishing hut for the day, was around 6000 baht.

There is also a very large tackle shop there with very reasonable prices.

I have bought quite a few reels out here, Shimano is an excellent brand, when I was working on an Island in the middle east I bought a beach casting multilier and a couple of fixed spools, I spent the next 5 years taking a shedload back for my mates on every visit to Thailand. Uk prices are incredibly inflated, I have had Penn reels fall apart on me after a seasons hard fishing but these Thai multipliers go on and on. And yes I do maintain them after use fresh water wash ad lubrication with a quality grease. On a lighter note:

Forget the Tai Chi, here is some useful anti-stress advice for you fishermen out there sent to me by a dear friend; I am passing this on to you because it definitely worked for me and we all could use more calm in our lives.

By following this simple advice, I have finally found inner peace. A Doctor proclaimed the way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started.

So I looked around my house to see things I'd started and hadn't finished and, before leaving the house this morning, I finished off a bottle of Merlot, a bottle of shhhardonay, a bodle of Baileys, a butle of vocka, a pockage of Prunglies, tha mainder of bot Prozic and Valum scriptins, the res of the Chesescke an a box a chocolets. Yu haf no idr who fkin gud I fel.Peas sen dis orn to dem yu fee AR in ned ov inr pece

Hi easters!! i get a lot of gear (fishing tackle i mean ! 55) from website shops as i am in the South and if you are white things tend to be a bit steep! lol helps to read some thai though! try www.muangpla.com, chinglew (something) and www.parknumfishing.com, some good deals on top of the range kit...anyone know of any nice places to fish with lots of pla shadow in them?

I bought a shimano 2500 FX a few months back and is a good little spinning reel, don't know if it is a copy, probably is at it was only 900 baht

The first thing one should know is what type of reel does she use. There are spinning reels and casting (level wind) reels. Then fit the reel to the size of fish she goes for. For instance, smaller fish requires lighter line and consequently smaller reels. Just find out what size rod and line she uses and go from there. I had the best luck with shimano in the past, but Penn, Abu are good also. Much luck.

Regarding fishing tackle prices comparing the UK with Thailand I recently bought a Penn Liveliner 760L in the UK and paid £90 on ebay with most tackle shop prices being around £98 currently. This compares with an advertised price of 3800 baht on Parknum

Comparing the UK price for an Okuma SLR-10L at £120 and a Thai price of 3100 baht there are significant savings to be had (if the genuine article) as already mentioned by a previous poster. I also compared the Shimano TLD 15 the UK price being approx £100 and the Thai price showing at 4800 Baht so no real saving to be had there. I shall certainly be comparing Baht/UK prices in preparation of my next trip to Thailand in a few weeks time.

Very little difference in pricing to be honest, the biggest difference is availability. There is more choice back home, although shops like 7seas at BSR or Parknum tend to have almost everything I need. So I only shop online for fishingt stuff when I'm after something very specific, or very new.
