Accident Close Call as 22-Wheel Lorry Collides with Fuel Tanker in Phayao
Picture courtesy of Amarin. A crash in Phayao could have resulted in an explosion after a 22-wheel container lorry collided with a stationary fuel tanker on the side of the road. The incident took place at approximately 13:30 on April 27, along the Ubali-Ban Jampawai Road, in the Mueang District of Phayao province. The collision occurred when the 22-wheel container lorry, registration from Chonburi, crashed into the rear of a fuel tanker. The force of the crash caused damage to the front left side of the lorry, shattering various parts of the vehicle. The driver, 26-year-old Jakkrikrit Thanawiset, sustained head injuries and was quickly attended to by emergency responders before being transported to Phayao Hospital for further treatment. The fuel tanker, registered from Suphanburi, had been parked on the shoulder of the road while the driver was inside drinking coffee. The driver reported hearing a loud noise from behind and realised that the tanker had been struck by the container lorry. As a result of the impact, part of fuel tanker’s tank was ruptured, leaking fuel onto the road. Firefighters and emergency rescue teams from Mae Ka Municipal Rescue Service were dispatched to the scene, bringing fire trucks to control of the situation and prevent a potential fire. The driver of the fuel tanker believes the 22-wheel lorry may have been involved in a “sleeping driver” incident, suggesting that the lorry driver fell asleep behind the wheel before colliding with the tanker. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the incident, and insurance companies from both parties have been notified to assess the damage. Adapted by Asean Now from Amarin 2025-04-28. -

The incident occurred when a delivery rider, was en route to deliver an order. A car, driven by two foreign men, reportedly grazed his motorcycle without causing a collision. Witnesses stated that the visibly intoxicated foreigners then threw a bag of rubbish from their vehicle, which struck the rider. The rider approached the car, sounding his horn to confront the men about their behaviour. In response, one of the foreigners opened the car door and began shouting abuse. The driver soon joined in, leading to a heated verbal exchange. The situation quickly turned violent, with both foreigners allegedly assaulting the 44-year-old rider, who sustained bruises and other minor injuries. Throughout the altercation, the men reportedly hurled insults at Thai people, despite the efforts of a Thai woman who tried to intervene. As the fracas unfolded outside a convenience store, several bystanders, angered by the foreigners’ disrespectful behaviour, stepped in to assist the rider. Witnesses said the crowd retaliated, pushing and striking the tourists, who eventually fled into the shop seeking refuge. Police from Pattaya City Police Station soon arrived at the scene. The foreigners, fearing for their safety, sought protection from officers and accused local residents of stealing their mobile phone. Authorities successfully defused the situation and escorted all involved parties to the police station. The two tourists, whose names and nationality was not disclosed by authorities, were fined for disorderly conduct and agreed to pay 15,000 baht in compensation to the injured rider before being released.
