BANGKOK, Nov 24 (TNA) – Senior Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry officials yesterday dismissed reports that the European Union (EU) was able to slap a ban on the import of cooked chicken products from Thailand, while accusing competing exporters of trying to discredit the nation’s chicken industry.

The government’s insistence that the country’s avian flu situation have considerably improves follows in the wake of a report from the Thai Embassy in Brussels suggesting that the EU be prepared to ban imports of cooked Thai chicken products on the grounds that Thailand’s avian flu measures are not sufficient to completely control the disease.

Yesterday Mr. Banphot Hongthong, the Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Cooperatives, expressed confidence that the ban was no more than a rumour, noting that Thailand had continually provided the EU with reports on the avian flu situation.

However, he warned that a ban could deal a devastating blow to Thailand’s export sector, with the loss of around 30 percent of its total chicken exports.

Mr. Yukol Limlamgthong, the Director-General of the Department of Livestock Development, likewise leapt to the defence of Thai chicken products yesterday, saying that the proposed ban stemmed not from the quality of Thai chicken products, but from attempts by competitors to discredit Thailand and seize its market share.

Nonetheless, he stressed that it was imperative that Thailand adjust its chicken farming systems to ensure that they met international standards.

In February the EU is to send officials to inspect Thai chicken farms. (TNA)--E006
