Police Fire Tear Gas At Protesters In Front Of Parliament

This has to be the UNDERSTATEMENT of the year!!!

An election was held, upheld and the PAD is trying to undo that. Not once but twice already. What the PAD is doing is making the ordinary Thai irrelevant. Their PAD's elitist attitude speaks for itself.

PAD has never tried to 'grab power' , you might try and catch up with the last 3 years of politics here!

an fraudulent election now. An illegal election last time.

Test results : Explosives located

Director of Central Institute of Forensic Science Thailand (CIFS) Khunying Dr Pornthip Rojanasunun insisted explosive materials were located from the injured following October 7 clashes between police and People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD)'s protesters. However, further tests were needed to for the sources of explosives, expected to be known by two days.

Khunying Dr Pornthip said today (October 13) after witnessing mock up of using of tear gas to disperse protesters at the army's fields that normally, adopting tear gas to disperse protesters would not contain explosive materials.

But based on preliminary tests today, explosive materials were found. However, further tests were needed. The result was expected to be known by two days.

Police was reportedly accused to using explosive materials to disperse PAD's protesters on October 7, causing two people dead and scores of people injured.

:o oh,oh...."Tianmen Square type Crowd disperser bullets containing some tear gas", so now is the riddle who ordered the purchase and the use?

Usually it's well known, to the producer, what harm the product can inflict!

The issue may be more than just the tear gas purchased. Based on a letter from an eye witness published in this morning's The Nation, intent may not have been to disperse the crowd, but rather to punish them. The eyewitness says not only did the police fire the tear gas directly at the demonstrators, but they also surrounded the demonstrators instead of trying to disperse them. The writer added that if someone in an adjoining property didn't take pity on the demonstrators and open a large gate, there would have been a lot more injuries as they were surrounded.

Khunying Pornthip who has now stated that Angkana was killed by an explosive (RDX?) tear gas grenade fired staraight into her chest has asked questions about why the police fired quite so many tear gas canisters and why they had surrounded the demonstrators on all sides. It seems that there may have been some nasty intent. I think all of us are aware that the use of tear gas in a proper way always means leaving demonstrators a path through which to exit. That is the purpose of usibng the stuff. If this wasnt done the intent of the attack will take a different meaning unless due to pure hopeless command and control and training. Either way it is time for a resignation or two now that we know how Angana was killed and it was by at least improper use of tactics.

Lets hope the funeral can begin some kind of healing process and some coming together although no doubt I am going insane to even think of such a thing.

Thais, from the "ordinary walk of life" more and more talk aout an "invisible 3rd hand" in this all.

There are two "invisible hands." The one that Thaksin first accused of trying to bring him down (who still is a bit invisible) and the one who is seeking asylum in a far away land. From my perspective, one "invisible hand" is a good guy and the one with arrest warrants outstanding is not.

Chalerm says PAD deserves slap for hating police

Public Health Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung said Monday that leaders of the People's Alliance for Democracy deserved a slap on their mouth for saying they hate police following last week's crackdown on protesters.

Chalerm said he was a former police officer and he knew that police did not intend to kill or maim protesters.

Chalerm said he did not order police to use force against the protesters as alleged by the PAD because he is a public health minister, not interior minister.

Chalerm alleged that the PAD is being advised by four active police generals and a former police general.

He said that if the PAD leaders hated police, they should not receive help from the five police generals and should ask the five police generals to leave the rally site in the Government House.

Chalerm with his usual vitriol. Maybe for just one second he should think about his own family and lack of respect for the police. The sooner this loser and his family of braindeads is not part of the Thai political scene the better. Any party that sees fit to make an idiot like this a minister is clearly deluded.

If Chalerm hates the police so much to put the rogue behaviour of his own hated offspring before the Royal Thai Police Force maybe he should publically burn his own police uniform and tear his epaulettes asunder and claim never to associate with such again as they publically insulted his own family......

Talk about hypocrits and here is a prime example.

Had he been drinking when interviewed as we hear he has shall we say a little problem. Now a health minister with that kinda problem how fitting

Chiang Mai doctors back off from police boycott

A group of doctors from Chiang Mai University's Faculty of Medicine have backed off from their decision to not treat policemen.

The latest move came after pro-government people in Chiang Mai attacked a faculty staff.

"Actually, our measure to not treat policemen was mainly a symbolic message," a faculty lecturer said on condition of anonymity, "We have to do something because we can't just ignore what happened on October 7. If we stay silent, how do people know what really happened?"

The lecturer refused to give his name out of concern that some pro-government group might try to threaten him.

The Nation

As far as I know, there still hasn't been any reported incidents that police were actually refused treatment. It's unfortunate that, at least according this article, that a faculty staff was attacked. Even making a symbolic statement can be enough for an attack these days.

PM “Sorry” about Fatal Clashes, Sets up Investigative Committees

UPDATE : 13 October 2008

The prime minister continues his duties as usual, appearing on live television last night to express his regret for the casualties in the October 7 clashes and announcing the establishment of two investigative committees.

Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat called for the first meeting of all economic ministers today, at the government's temporary office at Don Muang Airport.

The meeting focused on the ongoing global financial crisis and its impact on Thailand's economy and stock market in order to determine appropriate measures to alleviate the problem.

Last night, the PM appeared on national television to deliver a statement, addressing the fatal clashes between anti-government protesters and the police on October 7.

Somchai expressed his regrets about the deaths and injuries resulting from the bloody spat and announced that he has set up two investigative committees to unravel the problems and propose compensation for all victims.

The premier admitted that Thai society is in a high state of conflict, adding that legal boundaries have been crossed.

He pleaded with all those involved in the current political movement to abide by the law and adhere to the principles of democracy.

In addition, Somchai provided updates on the government's attempt to help Thailand handle the affects of the global economic crash, the preparation for the royal funeral rites of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, and the celebration of His Majesty the King's birthday in December.

The Thai government is also set to play host to the ASEAN leaders' summit at the end of the year, when Government House will be required to welcome all international delegates.

Moreover, the PM stressed that he does not plan to stay in power forever, saying he would quit if more constructive approaches to restore peace and the political system have been found and accepted by all parties.

After his televised speech, Somchai told reporters that the government has appointed former Constitution judge, Preecha Panichwong, to chair the fact-finding team, and Deputy Prime Minister Chaovarat Chanweerakul to lead the rehabilitation committee.

The army should uphold the law and clear out the protesters if the police can't do it. No other country in the world would let a group of protesters take over public buildings and disrupt the government. I can't believe anyone would think the PAD have been dealt with a "heavy hand". With all due respect to your views,I would guess that one person would disagree with you..the fellow that got his lower leg blown off at the shin would consider that act somewhat heavy handed. As long as Thaksin's former party is in power, unfortunately this "heavy hand" will rear it's ugly head again and again ad nauseum. Why is it only in Amazing Thailand do you get your leg blown off in a "benign" tear gas attack on protestors? My wife's large family in Phuket are all against the government except one brother -in- law.I am on the fence in Canada, holding my nose whilst voting Conservative or Green party.

Thai queen weighs in with anti-government protesters

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand's Queen Sirikit attended the funeral on Monday of a protester killed in clashes with police last week. <snipped>

After chants of "Long Live Her Majesty" from thousands of members of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), the queen told Jinda Radappanyawuthi, father of 28-year-old victim Angkana, that his daughter had died in a noble cause.

"Her Majesty said my daughter was a good woman since she had helped the nation and preserved the monarchy," Jinda told reporters after a brief audience at the end of the Buddhist cremation. Tears streaked down his face as he spoke.

As watch commander in a maximum security prison in US, I have been involved in numerous riots where chemical agents(tear gas etc.) were deployed. I can tell you with absolute certainty a tear gas grenade cannot blow your leg off. The explosive charge is only strong enough to disperse the agent, not tear off limbs.

Which specific tear gas ammo and specific weapons were used to fire them for your group?

Are they exactly the same as what Thai riot police used yesterday?

Do you you know what specific tear gas ammo and the specific weapons they use to fire them?

Do you know that differing tear gas ammo and the differing weapons used to fire them have differing capabilities?

I respect your position you had in the States. It is the same one as one of my closer friends has in the States.

*edit.

P.S.

Have you seen the photos posted earlier in the thread of the shotguns the police had yesterday?

If you put any number of differing ammo in one of those, could that take a leg off? A foot?

Sorry we never heard back on any of my questions, but that's ok... we've all subsequently learned a lot on matter....

Investigators: Thai Police Used Cheap Tear Gas Laced with Powerful Explosive on Protesters

Thai riot police used a cheap Chinese tear gas that contained an explosive powerful enough to rip craters in the ground to disperse crowds of anti-government protesters last week, an investigator said Monday.

The investigation by forensics experts and a human rights commission could explain why several protesters had limbs and feet blown off and three died in clashes last week with police, who insist they only fired tear gas into the crowd.

Investigators found that police used three types of tear gas — from China, the United States and Spain — but "relied heavily on tear gas made in China," said Pornthip Rojanasunand, director of the Central Institute of Forensic Science.

Pornthip said an experiment showed that the Chinese gas contained high levels of RDX — a chemical commonly used to make bombs and not a standard component of tear gas intended for crowd control. Pornthip's institute conducted the investigation as part of a probe into the clashes by the National Human Rights Commission.

I do have one additional question for bassmaster50:

In your former position, did the tear gas you used contain RDX?
