I don't think many people plan on leaving Thailand, I don't think that is the issue.

It's those who haven't planned enough to remain in Thailand, the issue on leaving Thailand is not one of choice but of a necessity.

me thinks wild horses would n't drag people away from thailand,or an empty bank account, anything else is just unthinkable

No availability of poor women to exploit would be the killer.

Why is Tokyo not a destination for sex tourists, everything is available there, so why is it not a prime destination for the quality 'Tourists ' that wash up on Thailands shores ?

Cos they can't freekin' afford it, that's why !

You seem to hang around Thailand an awful lot. Got bored of Monaco did you? :D

Funny you should say that............

I was in fact banned from the casinos in Monaco/ Monte Carlo after taking them for 300 Million Euros in 2 days.

I know you'll belive this as it's ThaiVisa, and nobody tells lies here do they ........ :o

That's a pretty sweeping generalization. Sounds like you are trying to promote a personal prejudice. Not everyone here is a sex tourist; not everyone considering leaving would be doing so out of necessity.

What about Brazil there currency has dropped worse than the Aussie dollar and it has many of the same attractions of Thailand.

Good weather, beaches, babes galore, not sure about the food thou.

Oh My God!

Dont even think about it.

I have been there plenty, due to my job.

Any negative issue that has been brought up here about Thailand, can be mutiplied several times when it comes to Brazil.

Huge crime rate. The bigger cities have regular gunfights between crime gangs and the Police. Huge corruption among the Police.

The women are so over rated, and they seem to think that just because they walk on the streets in bikinis, it does not matter if they are 80+ Kilos, they are soooo sexy, because they are the famous sexy Brazilian women.

The beaches are like the beaches in Pattaya (filled with scammers, thiefs, etc). The typical vacation areas are over crowded.

I can go on and on, but this is about Thailand, which is heaven on earth compare to Brazil.

If the baht goes down, expect the price of goods to go down
:o:D

The retailers will reprice if they can't sell.

Yep, that's the Thai philosophy for sure - If it doesn't sell, "reprice" it :D

A good friend of mine has a Brazilian girlfriend. They just got back to Florida from Brazil. My friend says it is VERY dangerous, Gasohol cost $7.50 US per gallon and a new bare bones Honda Civic cost $50,000 US. He says she will have to go back alone the next trip. He decided that Brazil is NOT a good place to retire.

With my family (Thai wife and our daughter) we no longer plan to leave Thailand.

Because we just left 3 weeks ago - and we are now in Tokyo, probably move somewhere else in Japan.

Of course, nothing to do with THB - but with everything else.

I won't leave Thailand because of currency issues, but I would be tempted by the right job offer overseas, although I'd retain ties here and only go for 3-4 years. This is particularly pertinent right now - such an offer has recently come up from London.

But the currency issue is a pertinent one for a very good reason. We have to face some stark facts. At current exchange rates, an expat quality life in Bangkok is simply not the good deal it used to be. In the past few months I've spent time in both Chicago and London and I came to a bizarre conclusion. Having $10 in my pocket in the US, sure feels like a lot more money than having 340 baht in Bangkok. Similarly, having 10 pounds in London feels better than having 590 baht in Bangkok. I'm sure the Ozzies and Kiwis are feeling the same right now.

I've just bought a condo here. Not an expensive one - just 6million. Luckily I sent the money from NZ about two weeks ago at around 23 to the Kiwi. Had I done it today, it would have cost me NZ30,000 more.

Like I said, if I go, I'll retain ties here and will go back to make some serious money before retiring back in THailand (not Bangkok) in a few years time. Hopefully, the exchange rate will be more helpful then.

I dont know about 6 million being not expensive......especially when you can buy a reasonable house in Thailand for a lot less than that.

Well, Tolley, I appreciate your advice. I really do.

If I had wanted to buy a freakin house, I would have done so. For a variety of reasons I wanted and needed a decent size condo that met certain quality standards and was based in a few sois close to where I live now.

I know how much houses cost. I'm currently negotiating on buying the house for my retirement in Chiang Mai.

But thanks for your input.

I sent money on July 9th, from Oz, the condo was 78K A$. Today it would be 122K and I would not have bought it.

Relax did you forget your medication today or something?

It wasn't meant as a criticism over house or condo choice rather it was the fact that you considered 6million baht as not expensive.

6 million baht is cheap for Sukhumvit 11.

It's probably not very cheap for Buriram. I don't know. I didnt want to buy there.

Besides . . six million? Drop in the ocean, old fella

That's what I like about you Bender, your ability to be condescending to the OP while complimenting yourself at the saem time. Envious of this trait, but I working on it. :o

For most on TV I would guess, 6 million anything is a chunk of change.

Don't know anything about Buriram but............................

If you have so much would you mind sending a little my way.....

Yes I suppose 6 million baht is chump change for some people but for me it is a substantial amount and probably for most people it is a significant investment especially for thailand.

Quite a number of mentions in this thread about thai women .. and it was

But while you were at it., it seems that you could have defended your "It's those who haven't planned enough to remain in Thailand, the issue on leaving Thailand is not one of choice but of a necessity." .. except that you seem to be unable.

I've been thinking quite a lot lately. For me, it's the bureaucracy surrounding my visa .. reporting, etc. The uncertainties don't help and not being able to buy any damned house / condo I can afford ..

Right now I have Chile in my crosshairs. Much more stable than Thailand, which is important at my age. Incredible range of landscapes and temperatures in which to live. Much easier residency.

If you cant afford a condo in Thailand then Im not sure where you will be able to afford one. You can buy a condo or a house here for under 1m Baht - thats pretty dam_n cheap.

This obviously affects you more if you rely on income from overseas. I bought my money (GBP) to Thailand at 70 to pound so on paper I've made quite a profit if I was to cash in now, so that would perhaps be the only incentive to leave. However I get a far higher return on my cash over here than in the UK so for now I'll be staying put. Hopefully the rate will continue the trend down to 50 and beyond (although I doubt this).

go to Brazil and weep! even though dropping back recently the Brazilian Real has APPRECIATED nearly 100% against the US-Dollar during the last 5-6 years. inflation is rampant and my friends in Sao Paulo and Rio are joking "we have to spend our holidays in the USA because we can't afford Brazil."

If people are sailing so close to the wind financially, that 10-20 percent fluctuations are a problem then they'll always be troubled.

I build my house when the euro was about 37.50 baht.(2003)

During my retirement (since 2004) it was between 44 (mid 2005) till 52 (mid 2008).

I agree with above mentioned post.I wouldn't have left my homecountry to retire here, if being (financially) a borderline case.
