hello there,

I would like to have your opinion ppl if you don't mind. I'm going to be in thailand from 13/12 till 17/01. I am going to Patts, Phuket and Samui. It;s not my first time, actually it's my 4th, but I still would like to have some opinions and recommendations. The thing is that I never keep business cards or remember the places I stayed.

Can you recommend some guest friendly guesthouses or hotels in those areas, especially Patts? Budget is 400-800 ideally. Also do you recommend booking since it will be peak season?

Cheers

Though the "peak" season is, in my opinion, likely to be very poor, you are going to have problems with accommodation in your price range over New Year. The biggest problems will be in Samui and Phuket and even in Pattaya, you will not get much at your bottom end, if anything at all.

If you are flying, using Bangkok Airways between your destinations, then I suggest you book well ahead, now if you can. If using "on the ground" travel, then you can sort it out when you arrive.

Consider where you will spend Xmas and New Year and sort out your accommodation well in advance. At the levels you are talking about, few places have websites and you should not just chance it and turn up.

I think you'll have to up your budget to something like Bt1500 a day in Samui and Phuket and Bt1000 a day in Pattaya. You may get less but even the best of the worst will be over your Bt400 bottom line, even in Pattaya. Pattaya in normal seasons, low season if you like, has a bottom end of about Bt400/500 and more at New Year.

Best of luck but I think you should be prepared to pay substantially more than you have stated.

thanks for your quick reply

last year I went to Phuket during the New Year and found a good room, quite big, with refrigerator, tv, aircon, hot/cold water for 700baht...it was maybe 2 mins away from Patong beach by motorbike..the thing is I don't remember the name of the place, maybe I get to remember where the place is located and might get lucky if they still have rooms available..

but as you said, most likely this year the peak season won't be that good, so I might find some rooms available.

Two years ago, there was a cheap place called, I think, Queen Hotel or something similar, for 800B/night during peak season.

Links seem to be frowned upon, but from googling, this sounds like the place:

Queen Pattaya Hotel, 356/4 Moo 9 Central Pataya Road Pattaya 20260 Thailand

The description on the unlinked website is accurate -- short walk to beach, and just across from a supermarket.

I didn't much like the place; it is very worn down, and I only stayed there because the better hotels that I knew were fully booked up. But if you want a really cheap room, it's not terrible.

BTW, the website reviews seemed to be extremely variable -- some claiming really major problems, others just reporting cockroaches. It may be different on a room-by-room case. Mine just had cockroaches, and not too many.

I stayed at Lilly House, Lamai Beach, Samui, Christmas of 2007.

Run down, but OK, 1 min to beach, 10 sec to bars. Good restaurant. Fan/ ac

Fan 250 baht.

Ask around, when you get there.

indeed the queens hotel has received mixed reviews..I'm not much into luxury since I need the room to sleep, shower and obviously bum bum from time to time :D ...but I'm not either a big fan of roaches, I hate the dam_n things actually :D ..will still keep it in mind..thanks for the suggestion...

Re Samui: I prefer a place in Chaweng area, I recall around 4 yrs ago I stayed in a room close to Burger King for 600baht, (obviously after some haggling) in mid November...if I don't find in Chaweng, I will be happy to find a place in Lamai..then all I would need is a jeep or a motorbike to get to Chaweng (20mins tops)

I'm going with 2 friends and I just want some peace of mind (for them more than me) that if I stroll around without booking I will be able to find vacant rooms. I guess I will but would like to have other opinions.

Any more suggestions re places recommended are more than welcome..

thanks for all of you guys (and maybe gals :o ) who spend some time offering me valuable feedback :D:D

Several places will be available in Pattaya.

Intown Holiday, soi 11, between 2nd road and soi bukhao. Should be less than 800B. Not the greatest, but the TV has good financial channels, BBC, Deuce Welle, Asia News, Al Jazeera in English. Small rooftop pool is OK for a dip if the day is hot in the afternoon. Rooms are a bit worn, but big. Beds are not the usual hard bricks and I find them pretty comfortable. Good central location for catching baht buses on 2nd road or soi bukhao depending on where you want to head. Not a bad walk down to beach road if you want and the baht bus from there down to walking street. Lots, and lots of massge places on this soi. Nothing fancy, but adequate. Get a massage, take a dip in the pool. A great way to spend a few hours in the warm afternoon. also a few late night bars that close the doors but stay open late on this street. Worth moseying on into. Really nice laundry gals on this soi. Very pleasant and worth stopping in to say hi to.

Six story kind of skinny hotel over on Soi 2 or 3, north side of Soi, West of 2nd road. can't think of the name. My friends have stayed there, usually around 650B.

Numerous places all over Soi Bukhao. One place not far down from Central Road on the East side of Soi Bukhao was something with "blue" in the name. I stayed there for two weeks last year and it was fine. Nice older lady ran the place. Very clean and simple. About 4 stories, no lift. 550 baht was the price in November last year. In room safe as I recall.
