Gps Kenwood-garmin

Featured Replies

I have a Kenwood sound system in my car (MU7) and i'd like to connect the GPS unit Kenwood KNA-G430TH (price around 27.000 baht). This unit is from Garmin and is only in thai. Now, they ask me an 8.000 more baht for a SD card with the english language maps.

Is there a different way to upgrade the gps with the english language and save the 8000??

Yeah, I know. But I would like to connect to the touch screen already installed...

I realise that, I have the same unit too.

As an aside, dont bother buying an iPod lead as it does NOTHING more than when using a USB lead that comes free with a new iPod.

You can download the english maps on www.garmin.com,

but there was a warning-note in my box that says that IF you download the English OS from Garmin website and install it it on a thai-garmin gps, it will not be able to go back to thai again.

Is that why they want to store the english maps on a SD-card perhaps?

But 8000 baht is too much for that.

take care!

Good to know! Because I don't need thai maps at all! I'll go garmin website to check.

Hello,

you can not download the map of Thailand from the Garmin website. I think what comehome meant is the firmware, that is a free download.

Some time ago you could buy them there for 139 Us$ or so but only if you had a address for delivery in USA.

They did not send it to Thailand, because the map here is sold only by ESRI - and as you already know now, they sell it not cheap.

Uwe

addition:

The map that was sold by Garmin USA was a plug and play SD card. You could use it in every compatible Garmin unit. The map that is sold in Thailand has the same content or data, but is tied to a specific unit.

That means, if you should have the desire to change the hardware you can not use the ESRI Thailand map in the new unit.

Just download it on a torrent (ver 9 out now) and stick on a sd card of your own..... :)

Please let me know how you got on,i have the same in my Isuzi LS,i bought mine from Isuzi Pattaya and was told that it was included in the price as i asked for all the toys. After picking it up i was informed that it was only Sat support and had to pay extra to get in installed.

I payed extra and was assured it would be in English, but of course the street maps is in Thai GRRRRRRRRRRRR.My TGF watched them install it,4 hours to do,so swapping sim cards will not be easy as i took the clove compartment out and could not even see it.

I have since moved to Hua Hin and would love to change mine to English to.

I will also try my IPod with the USB Port know, have you had any problems with your mobile phone connecting as well,i have

I don't buy Kenwood GPS unit, because after 2 years still too much esxpensive, so I'm going to buy some Garmin Nouvo or similar, for 9/10.000 baht.

I got the Ipod connection cable for my Kenwood unit and, although expensive, works fine. I use an Ipod 120 Gb and all the commands are well reported on the Kenwood touch screen.

I don't connect mobile to the Kenwoood.

Only partially correct. Garmin maps on SD card must be unlocked with a code derived from the GPS serial and unit ID number(s).

Not so with my Garmin SE Asia map. It is on SD card and is not linked to any particular device. You just pop it in and it works. I bought it mail order and the dealer had no opportunity to get details of my unit ID number. I borrowed an ESRI V.9 on SD card (pirated version) and that is the same. I thought it was just the MapSource maps that needed the code.

As I understand things, all current maps purchased direct from Garmin on SD card require unlocking, either by Garmin or the end-user, and are not MapSource compatible. The old maps on CD were MapSource compatible and MapSource generated the unlock code when the map was downloaded to the GPS. To be honest, there are so many pirated maps and so-called dealers on the internet that I don't think anybody knows what's going on. Some of the maps on the internet are already unlocked, while others require use of a key generator to unlock them. If this is not correct I'm sure somebody will let me know.

Garmin has two set's of maps

1) plug and play and are not upgradable, meaning if you want a update from them you must pay the full purcgase price again. But they will work in any unit.

2) locked to a unit and are upgradeable, some come with one year free upgrades and some with free lifetime updates or reduced price.

That may explain why City Navigator SEA NT costs $150.00 direct from Garmin and is locked to a unit, yet the same map is available on the internet at a bargain price and unlocked.

Click the Products tab to see whether this map is compatible with your device.

To view and use the maps on this card, you must have a compatible device with a microSD or SD card slot. Maps on microSD/SD cards cannot be copied or viewed on a computer.

Reduced price map updates are not available for these cards. If you want to update the maps, you must purchase a new card that includes the latest map data.

The microSD/SD card package includes a microSD card and an SD card adapter

This is for the CN South Eastern Asia Nt map, from the Garmin website. These maps on SD/Micro or not locked to a unit!

My Thai SD card came unlocked from Garmin USA.

Sorry newbie here -

the data on the SD cards:

presume you then copy that onto the Garmin unit, as opposed to having to leave the SD card in the unit at all times?

Nope... sounds like they sent you a pirate one. Legit garmin is locked to each device.

Ahh that explains it..

So the ones sold from the US get no upgrades and are locked.. the ones sold here are locked.

Depends on how much storage the unit has.. Because I like to leave multiple map set on the device and switch between them, and as cards are so cheap these days I just buy a 2 or 4 gb card for each unit I use and start filling them up.. I like using one of my handheld ones for a good travel companion so its got most of SEA in it, the europe full package, UK and Ireland with speed camera alerts and some home made Morocco maps.. kinda insane whan you think about it.

Maybe you need to buy a legal copy from Garmin and you will see that it is plug and play,

Garmin maps are locked in two ways,

On cd disk it is locked to your unit ID #

On Sd card it is locked to the card ID#, if you try to copy the map to another card and give it to your friend it wil not work.

Rather cheeky, then Garmin charges $150.00 for both the downloadable (locked to unit, upgradeable) and SD card (unlocked, plug & play, not upgradeable) maps. Then what are all those bargain priced Garmin maps available on the internet - pirated copies?

Everyone and their brothers are selling pirated maps. You don't have to look far to find these maps.

This was just to prove that you don't know what your chatting up.

You claim that all garmin maps are locked to the unit to be legal.

False.

Are both maps sold from Garmin website the same price but locked differently.

True

All Garmin maps sold at a lower price then Garmin website price Fakes????

False

Should I keep going?

As i said before, i am new to this GPS/SatNav malarky. I purchased from Amazon.uk a Garmin 760WT device, but as i am currently away from home and vehicle, not had the chance to fire it up. I am looking through the documents and cant see what size storage the unit has.

LivinLOS - Thanks for your reply. You say you have "home made" Morroco maps? Can you please expand, what do you mean/how do you make home made maps, - this interests me as a newbie. Can you point me to any good websites that cover this.
