Kithchen Worktop

I've tried all the usual suspects such as Home Pro, Index Living Mall, Home Mart, and none stock those KITCHEN WORKTOPS/SURFACES which are so readily available in the UK. at places like B+Q and Homebase.

I want a piece about 2 metres long by 2ft 6ins wide. They're usually about 2ins thick. The only place I know I haven't yet tried is Global House 1st Ring Road.

Also, is there a well known SECOND HAND Furniture Store where I might find a large old KITCHEN TABLE. In the UK we had one made out of old railway sleepers. That's the sort we like, Big, old, bulky (and cheap) not the skimpy modern jobs which are so freely available.

I've just noted another thread which discussed this very topic which seems to end up having to go to Homeproto choose it and getting your installer to install it. But I don't have an installer and I don't want one. It does appear you can't just buy a piece.

What is the material (for us non-UK types) you are looking for? If it is marble or slate or granite, I see big pieces placed outside of shops selling them and they would obviously cut to size and deliver. I can not dredge out of my memory right now where exactly, but but I want to say on Assadathorn Road, going north from Jaeng Sriphum (northeast corner of the moat) toward Lotus on the super highway.

Global House burned down.

You speaking of "Butcher Block" tables, surfaces??made of blocks of hardwood?

Well, something like that ; but a "butchers lock" table suggests it will be about 2ft. sq. I want a table about 6ft long by about 2ft 6ins wide and 2" thick ; made of wood but in a sort of raw state.I'm sure I've seen them somewhere. Rustic, garden furniture made out of lengths of timber as it appears when sawn straight from the tree trunk. It naturally comes in differing shapes according to the shape of the tree. That's one sort of table we'd like.

Another, is just any old secondhand table so long as its big, wooden, solid, heavy, thick, bulky and cheap! Some item with a bit of character. 16 century type stuff. Elizabethan. Not this anaemic-looking modern stuff; thin, spindly and angular. I was in a Second Hand Store yesterday just a few dozen metres along from Index Living Mall (nothing there, and its too expensive) which covers about an acre where there are tables galore but all modern and nasty, and surprisingly expensive. I'm hoping to pay not more than about 3000baht. Maybe a vain hope.

Noise

As for the kitchen work surface ; No, I don't want anything like granite or marble-that costs the earth doesn't it? I'm thinking of the normal run-of-the-mill ,UK ,cheap worktop. Nothing fancy. I'm not building an American-style kitchen (not with the UK £ rapidly disappearing down the plughole) I just want an off-cut, as we would say in the UK. 2metres long. Usually ,I believe, made of chipboard and surfaced with formica or similar.According to a previous thread you can just order a length from stores like Home Pro and they deliver it. Sounds easy. There were dissenting views but I will try it myself. When I asked about this stuff ( which they don't stock loose, though they have it displayed in their kitchens ) they certainly didn't mention ordering a piece.

Baan Tawai will make anything you want, made to your specs. If it's wood that's the place to go.

I've been told to look these places up on maps, guidebooks ,directories etc. but was also told it might be acceptable to ask. So, Where's Baan Tawai? It sounds like you know what you're talking about and I will definitely explore that suggestion for which I thank you.

As I've taken the admonitions to heart I looked it up in" Nancy Chandlers Guide" before I pressed "SEND" and lo, I discover its Ban Tawai Village Furniture Factory Outlets etc. It seems you've been relieved of the onerous task of locating your most welcome suggestion. H2-12 ; here I come.

I think you will find you need to get something made up. I have 2 tables as you describe that I got made up 5+yrs ago.

If you want to pound your chilli paste, bash your som tam or mince your meat Thai style that is what you will need.

Trying to do it on any of the tables I have seen for sale would be an absolute disaster, it would be instant disintegration to splinters.

You need to get wood and a carpenter, really depends how posh you need it to be. Mine are very basic but strongly built.

To get an idea of wood costs you could visit a few lumber yards, Thaveeporn on Charoenmuang Rd, and theres another on outer east side of moat close to Lai Thai (at least there used to be one there) and there are more but can't remember locations offhand. For carpenters you could try Ban Tawai and there are others out in Sanpathong area. I can get you phone numbers if you like as most seem to be related to my housekeeper! Carpenters can sometimes get good deals on the wood too, so good to try that option too.

I do feel you've understood my needs precisely ; a really sturdy, strong, old-fashioned Kitchen Table that would serve to prepare Henry VIII a good hearty, twenty-seven course meal if he just happened to pop in with Anne Boleyn for an evening's nosh, after slaughtering a few dozen deer in the local park.

As it happens, I was visiting my local Orcihid Farm near Mae Rim this afternoon and lo and behold its peppered with just the sort of big, long sturdy wooden tables that I'm looking for. they looked very expensive. They have a huge restaurant (or two) furnished entirely with these big, solid wooden tables. And many other characterful wooden artefacts dotted around the place.

I do like the idea of having one made up ( No, not posh at all ; just thrown together ) and I will first visit that village, Baan Tawai, before I do anything else. I looked up some recommended wood yards supposedly in the SRIDORNCHAI area SE of the moat , but ,on two attempts, I couldn't find any wood yards there.I will explore your suggestions next.

Many thanks for your detailed help and if I hit a brick wall in Baan Tawai I will certainly get in touch with you about carpenters. Many thanks.

PS. I don't speak Thai ( which often makes even the simplest problems seem insurmountable) and I live in Mae Rim.

There is a Taweepan lumber yard (sorry spelt it wrong before) on the road to Mae Rim after the stadium turn off. But it seems to be listed as Thaweepan Flooring - but might be worth a look

Map here

They seemed to have branched into a whole load of other things but a good enough place to start.

Many thanks for the spelling correction and I'll certainly look into their Workshop near Mae Rim on my in or out of Chiang Mai.
