Hello,

This is my first post but, I have spent endless hours on TV racking my brain on the endless amounts of info trying to figure out this big machine called Thailand.

Heres the lowdown on my situation...

My wife and I are both American we have 4 children.

We moved to Thailand on a Tour Visa Multi Entry which has been used up and we are currently on our 1st 30 day exemption.

The goal is to be here long-term and I am just getting things worked out for a work permit. Most likely it will be 2-3 more months before it's a go.

My question in regards to children is...

Once I have a WP or letter from the company and plans to leave the country to apply for a Non Imm,

Will my wife and kids fall under my new Non Imm Visa?

And is it possible for them to stay here when I leave the country to apply for the Non Imm Visa? Assuming we have a new tourist visa from somewhere. Most likely Laos.

Sorry if this isn't the correct forum for this I just figured the people here with kids would be the ones to ask.

Thank You

To get a longer stay before getting a work permit you should go to Vientiane Laos and get a 2 entry tourist visa which with 30 day extensions will give you about 90 days per entry. After 90 days you would then do a border run and get another 60 +30 days.

Your family can get visa extensions as dependents on your B visa extension after you get a work permit and 1 year extension.

See page 9 case 7.19 of the police order for info.

I am not sure what the age limit is but children can overstay with no fine and no problem.

If you do not feel like dragging them around border runs and Embassy trips .

Once you get settled you can do as Joe said.

I presume your children go to school. This makes them elligable for a educational visa of their own. You and your wife could even get a visa as their dependends if you can show 500,000 baht for yourself and 500,000 for your wife in seperate Thai bank accounts.

Thanks for the responses...

I'm still a bit unclear how their tourist visa switches over to be granted permission to stay as my dependents. Once I have a Non Imm.

Is it just a matter of paperwork?

Are they one minute on a tourist visa, then the next they are approved as legitimate dependents of a Non Imm visa holder? Which at that point they no longer need a tourist Visa?

Thanks again, sorry if this isn't making since, I feel like I'm trying to learn Calculus in Thai or something.

Once you have an annual extension based on your work (not a Visa)your dependants become eligable for the same extension.

They go to Immigration with at least 21 days remaining on their tourist visas and apply for a change of visa to a Non Imm O Visa. (2,000 Baht) With that Non Imm O they can apply for the annual extension as your dependants.(1,900 Baht) Usually you apply for the annual extension with around 30 days remaining on the Non Imm O.

As said your Children can get annual extensions in their own right if they go to school here.

Police Order with all the extension rules.

Have a look at 7.7, 7.8, 7.10, 7.19.

Also have a look at "Change Visa"

Once you have read all that, take an aspirin and come back here. :o

Just to clarify.

You need an extension of stay from Immigration in Thailand to go down this route. You first have to get your Visa and then apply for a 12 month extension from Immigration.

I think it children who are under 14 who will not be bothered about overstays.

However the education route will take care of the matter. :o
