Had a friend of mine that was asked by immigration officer why he didn't apply for extension of stay earlier.

According to the officer you can apply Jan 1st the year you turn 50. (he got 50 in late December)

This was immigrations in Koh Samui.

Is there other reports on this issue.

Could mean a lot for people waiting for 50th birthday.

This kind of rule works for Thais,

but I seem to remember a post, way back, that it does not apply to Farangs.

You must reach your 50th birthday before applying. :o

Yes, it is possible some people have gotten away with this in the past but the odds are anyone trying will be well stifled. You are welcome to try; I am sure it will give the officer a good chuckle.
