Mae Sot is the place to go.

Nice quiet border crossing.

Short 5 minute walk across the bridge, give the Burmese 500 bht for their stamp and walk straight back.

Forget about going into Myawaddy, it's a dump.

Get to the bridge before 4.00 as I was told by one of the immigration officers they close to farangs at 4.30.

If your driving from Kanchanaburi town allow at least 5 hours. The last section from Tak is alot slower from the main highway north and takes approx an hour, longer if you take it easy on the mountain roads.

I'll be taking whatever public transport is available, I assume I won't get more than 30 days? ...I could go to Laos for 60 but from the top left of Thailand that's going to be some complicated trip - I don't think the trains go across Thailand.

Thanks for your advice, looks like thats my only viable option.

You will only get 15 days.

You say that you have a visa. Or do you have a visa exempt 30 day stamp.

If you are going for a visa exempt entry you are only going to get 15 days.

If you have a tourist visa you would get 60 days.

If a non immigrant you would get 90 days.

I think you should plan a trip to Vientiane laos for a tourist visa.

You can catch a train from Kanjanaburi to Bangkok (Bangkok Noi station). It is incredibly slow. You would be much better off taking a first class air-con bus.

From Bangkok, you certainly can catch a train to the Thai/Laos border at Nong Khai. You can even book your train ticket from Bangkok to Nong Khai in advance at Kanjanaburi station. It's all linked up on the computer.

I got my last visa from Laos but had to return in a hurry so could not stay overnight and just got the 30 days automatic on exit which I'm half way through now. If I can get a bus from Kanchanaburi to Vientiene that would be perfect.
