A report on BBC news about UK ISPs censoring a page on Wiki showing a 1976 album cover, describes the Scorpions as heavy metal. Some of the locals down here are mad on this group, and lent me a cd. Now if this band are a heavy metal band then Dire Straits are punk rock. Anyone know how this b(l)and are/were actually classified.

Hard rock to power pop, depending on the album. I would, however, classify their first release, Lonesome Crow (1972 with Micheal Schenker), as heavy metal, because it sounds a lot like early Black Sabbath.

You got a point there somewhere - but then... who really cares, if or if not?

Like them too, but certainly not heavy metal as Metallica, Motorhead, Judas Priest or Iron Maidens... but there is quite a good definition in the wikipedia... as it start with Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin....

Well if that promo is an example of heavy metal, give me the Troggs, The Who, The Kinks. A much heavier sound. Heck by that video example Quo are Heavy Metal. :o Yes I do Like Iron Maden and Led Zepplin, so I know what I think constitutes heavy metal.

Led Zeppelin is not heavy metal. You would have to listen to the entire Lonesome Crow album and also have knowledge of early heavy metal like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple to understand the classification. The heavy metal style which emerged more than 10 years later (i.e. Iron Maiden, Dio, Judas Priest) is very different.

Check out early Scorpions stuff and you will be in no doubt that they WERE very heavy metal.

The Michael Schenker era was extremely heavy (before and after his stint with UFO).

They were a great live band in the late 70's and early 80's before they became mamby-pamby.

I saw them twice in the UK and left with my ears ringing!
