Can't speak for anyone else, but I never take my passport with me when going to a bar.

Is that ture? So does that mean you look obviously over 20? I look very young. does that mean I have to take my passport? the problem is I cant get it back until Xmas. So I cant go to any bar until I get it? really sucks.

Are you asking regards Thai bars ????.......

Chinese. So I look the same as Thai. does that mean they will check me?

Well...I am Thai. They've checked my ID 3 times in the past 4 years. Everytime, I showed them a fake ID I made with photoshop and they let me in. You must understand, most of the "doormen, bouncers" are not very good at reading English nor are they capable of telling a fake ID from a real one. ######...I have lots of fake drivers license too. Everytime a cop pulls me over, I hand them a fake license and show them my (real)US passport. They will keep the license and tell me to go to the police station to pay the "fine". I never go because I can just print out a new one lol.

What nationality are you? Bars don't usually check foreigners (unless they are owned by foreigners)

Come to think of it, it always stays at home unless I travel. I use my Thai driving licence if they need id and also carry a colour photocopy of my passport showing visa. If that's not enough...TOUGH SHIT!!

This seems all well and good for the 99 times that you get away with it. But what about the 1 time when you get caught. Call me crazy, but advising people to break the law in a foriegn country does not seem to be very sound.

To the point of the original post, I would never use my passport for anything other than official business (e.g., getting into a country, doing a financial transaction in a foreign country, etc.).

There is absolutely no need for a bar owner or doorman to know where you are from, what your PP# is, etc., etc.

Carrying your passport has been a hot topic recently, not because of age restrictions, because of the 'foreigners should have passport on them at all times' rule occasionally being enforced. I tend to keep a photocopy of my passport in my wallet. Have heard that in the bars in Bangkok (and I think maybe a bar in Pattaya) those without actual passports in drug testing raids were taken down the local copshop till someone could provide their passport for them. But then who wants to go on the piss with your passport on you? I worry about finding my way home after a night on the town, let alone my passport finding it home as well.

But back to the age thing you'll be fine. Extremely unlikely that anyone wil ask you, and if they do, well theres usually a hundred other such establishments that will welcome your custom.

Enjoy your first trip - I'm sure most people on this board haven't

I would think a driving licence or something else official would do the trick.

Pilots license is usually OK :D

Our local boozer over "ere has got so fed up with kids trying to get served its now over 20s only and you gotta prove it otherwise sling yer hook :D

I dont seem to have that problem any more :o

One of my friends, also a young Chinese girl, often go to bars. She told me I had to show my passport and the copy was no use. So I cant understand why the doormen dont check yours, but my friend's. does she look too young? If so, it's impossible for me to enter any bar without a passport cos I look much younger than her. :o

Q Bar raid

This was the thread about Q Bar being raided and all foreigners who didnt have their original passport with them being carted off to the local police station.

It seems to be quiet at the moment for raids but Q Bar and some others were not letting people in if they dont have a passport. Dont know if this is still the case as I dont go there. Its not the case the bar is interested where you are from its the bar looking after its own best interest in case the police come.

But, it is the law that we are supposed to carry it at all times. Up to you if you do or dont.

I wouldnt recommend carrying fake ids, ok you might get away with it 9 times out of 10, but what happens when you get someone that can tell the difference? Dont come runnin back here complaining that you have been done.

I have been to silom and when i show them a foreign id card, either chinese or english they let me through with no problems. I have had problems with some Thai places though, mainly Escudo in Thong Lor. I went there one week with no problems and back again the following week and they wouldnt let me in without my real passport, not even a copy would do.

I tried to explain that i was here just the week before but the guy on the door was having none of it. I didnt have my passport at my home anyway since my company had hold of it to sort out my work permit stuff.

It does depend on where you go...I was convinced the guy on the door just didnt want to let me in. Simple as that. A copy of your passport is enough and if it wont get you in then i think its best to go somewhere else...plenty of good bars in bkk.

Ever so often the police decides to raid the one or other place and might fine the bar-owner for allowing people into the premises who do not carry proper ID.

So the bars certainly act in their own interest, not to harass the clients.

I think we established in previous threads, proper ID is an ID-card issued by the Thai authorities or a p/port for foreigners showing personal details and status of permission to stay in the country.

Not that I carry my p/port all the time, but for sure to areas/places where it would be likely a raid can occur.

I do not see any way to fight the police, neither in Thailand nor any other place.

Even, if theoretically one might say the law enforcement officer(s) have no right to check somebody's identity without reason, their report might just read:

"We found person ........., a foreigner, acting suspicious wherefore we decided to establish his/her identity. As the person was not carrying proper identification papers we temporarily arrested hom/her and transferred to the station for further identification."
