It is now common knowledge the degree of Anti-Americanism that is exhibited throughout the world.People I know who live in London and Switzerland are all complaining how bad it is and they want to leave.

Is this as prevelant in Thailand as it is in the UK,Europe, etc.?

Hope I won't have to wear all black and a Canadian flag to not appear American.

The terror bombiongs in Bali were aimed at Americans though Australians were the unintended victims.Do Aussies,Euros, etc.,have to worry about looking American?

I'm a Yank and I don't see any anti anything here in Thailand. You might read about some on this forum but it's not really directed at the American people (just bush and his cronies) :o I get the impression that most Thais like us but then again, most think we're walking ATMs. I'm glad I came here and I won't be going back any time soon. :D Just like any other big city, gotta watch what and where you go. I've had one hard lesson in that respect.

Most non-americans (Caucasions) find it incredible that Bush Jnr got voted in again.....

For the Arab world, the support for Israel will always be a thorn in their side until the Palestinians have a sov country.

Add the war in Iraq, and...... blah, blah, blah.

I sincerely feel sorry for those peeps engaged in Iraq, a bloody and thankless job.

The allies should never have disbanded the Iraqi Army. Now they need it.

I would be v. surprised to hear of any anti-American feeling in LoS.

Most Thais don't give a xxxx what happens outside their borders.

A bit like the folks who live in the blue zone on the last electoral map of the USA....!

No anti-american/british in Thailand- very supportive. Land of Smiles intl politics is secondary to national politics. :o

I havent seen any negativism you speak of anywhere in Europe or Asia as a matter of fact its been the direct opposite. Would I go waving your flag around and advertising that you are from a western country, prob not. I wouldnt do that regardless since we are from western countries and all targets of nutters wherever you might travel in the world.

Forget about the Canadian flag technique. Most Thais think I'm from the U.S. :D

How would you feel I was to travel the world pretending I'm a U.S citizen though I've only set foot there twice, in '76 and back in 68?

Proudly show your colors, don't cowardly wear the Canadian flag :o

thats very true , but i feel that thais do have some supressed resentment for foriegners . look at the way thais seem to regard arabs and indians.

with caucasians its not so apparent unless they overstep themselves by way of demanding behaviour and aggressive arrogance , something which happens regularly with americans (and brits after a few drinks) , the american way of doing things , whilst fine on home ground doesn't travel well and causes negative feelings in most parts of the world . i dont think it has anything to do with politics unless you hold with the belief that a country's political policy mirrors the psyche of the people that government represents.

any resentment felt by americans (and brits) is probably more a result of their own behaviour and lack of sensitivity to thai sensibilities and less to do with the actions of bush or blair.

I don't think the average Somchai Bloggs differentiates between farang nationalities so much. We're all just...farang.

Hope I don't get killed because someone starts associating Americans with a maple leaf. Don't get me wrong.... in a tight spot I'd gladly give a flag, or even my passport to help an American out of a dangerous situation, but in certain parts of the world that flag is respected for the blood we've shed, and/or the way we've treated other countries over the years.

I met an American in Dieppe (France) once bragging about how some old guy bought him a couple beers because he was wearing a Canadian flag. This a**hole seemed to not see the huge cemetary full of maple leafs outside of town.

The respect that flag has, has come at a high cost over the years, please do not abuse it.

Maybe you'll just have to work extra hard to convince others that the stars and stripes stands for something positive (as I myself believe).

So feel free to use our flag if you are in danger, we understand that others do misjudge you. Just remember that to 34 million of us its more than just a travel accessory.

I'm not proud to be non-American, but I'm very proud to be Canadian.

I'm British and feel very anti american. The arrogance.... the way Americans seem to think they alone defeated Hitler.... lack of knowledge or understanding about the world beyond their borders.... Iraq, Afganistan (past and present)... their diabolical treatment of prisonesrs in their own country... the gross judicial system...

But that is America I feel badly about, never Americans. All the americans I meet are super people.

I might point out that many Americans feel badly about their inward looking, insensitive foreign policy, and about their government. Also many, if not most, British people feel just as frustrated with our own government too.

So, don't take it personally on the part of British, Thai's etc... Americans are almost always polite and good people (unlike the typical British tourist), and appreciated as such.

The only dangerous antagonism I sense to the Americans comes from the Midle East countries.

I'm Canadian and also definatly not anti-American. my Grandmother was from Wisconsin and i have a lot of relatives in the US.

BUT..... U S Citizens masquerading as Canadian Citizens is akin to being a spy. The US was not too big on Alkiada members from the middle east masquerading as flight school students. Why is it suddenly alright tor US Citizens to masquerade as one of us northerners, Canada is not the 51st US state we are a soveriegn nation.

If you want to be a Canadian, that bad. then apply for immigration like the rest of the world does. AND.....if you meet Canada's high standards then in 3 years you can apply for citizenship carry a Canadian passport and even get a Canadian Tattoo if you so wish.

Enough said....

Kinda serious aintcha?

And,no,I surely don't want to be a Canadian eh?Unfortunately most Americans consider Canada as just a cold northern US state filled with plaid-wearing furry-hats-with-ears wearing hicks.

It is just an old ruse ugly American tourists use when travelling in Europe.

Canada and US will be one country one day  :o

What makes you think that Canadians will let the US join Canada anyway. We don't just give every Tom, Dick and Harry, free Medicare and low cost Prescription drugs and anyway few of you speak our two official languages (neither of which is Spanish). We don't have some outragious deficet here either in the worlds largest country and we already own about 50% of the mobile homes in Florida in the winter months... :D

I disagree that there is no anti-American sentiment in Australia. A majority of Australians oppose the Iraq adventure. Australians of all political persuasions worry about the long-term effects of global warming, and there is increasing unhappiness about the United States (which uses 25% of the world's energy, with 2% of the world's population) refusing to agree to emission targets.

Many of us remember Bush Snr.'s comment that he would not allow America's standard of living be affected by environmental concerns.....and the Hummer had not even hit the roads back then.

And most Americans do not even know where Australia is, or that we speak English, even though we are one country of the coalition of the not-very-willing.

America is a country formed, established and founded on lies, destruction, death, rape, pillage and exploitation of all the races that have populated it, red, black, yellow, brown and white. This type of governance trickles down to the present and will continue on into the future. There are plenty of resources to find this information. One of my favorites is 'A People's History of the United States,' by Howard Zinn, a decorated WWII pilot and historian. The Founding Fathers were not nice guys.

Thailand is happy place for US exiles :o .

There's plenty of resourses telling you that the world is flat too, but I hardly expect anyone to believe that twaddle either.

The US has its problems, but it's still the one everyone seems to run to when ever they need money, trade deals, protection, etc.

How many have died in massacres in Africa?

How many Chinese labourers died building Canada's railways?

How many died at the hands of the Japanese in ww2?

Or the Germans?

Or the Chinese in the various revolutions?

All countries have their shameful episodes... some just make an easier target than the others.

Cdnvic, you are missing the point. These countries you mention have had little effect on other nations; the US has used its foreign policy to adversly affect the political balance and economics of countries around the world. Once the exploitation of its own nation and people was realised, it moved outward across oceans to Japan, China, Vietnam ect.. I don't want to turn this into a history lesson so I'll finish here. Like I said, there is no place (Thailand) like home. :o

You seem to not understand that American factories in Germany were spared Allied bombing. What were they doing there in the first place? Henry Ford was a staunch supporter of Adolf Hitler. Need I go on? American merchants peddling opium in China so that Chinese workers become hooked laborers. Sounds like crack and South Central Los Angeles to me. American agribusinesses patenting Jasmine rice that Thai farmers have been growing for God knows how long, and the same happenning to farmers in India. Get your head out of the clouds. :D

Ok Jeff, let me make it simple. Most of the world's nations at the moment are thoroughly disgusted with the USA; if you can't figure out why, that's your loss, not mine. Have a good trip.

The USA is hated here in Thailand by a large number of Thais, they are just to polite to say it to your face. Doesnt anyone remember the Bin Laden shirts worn by thousands of Thais?

Myself, I do not have an opinion. :o:D

Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got

Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help alot.

Wouldn't you like to get away?

Sometimes you want to go

Where everybody knows your name,

and they're always glad you came,

You wanna be where you can see

our troubles are all the same

You wanna be where everybody knows

your name !

You wanna go where people know,

people are all the same,

You wanna go where everybody

knows your name :o
