Hi

has anyone here recently took their dog (that was bought and born here in thailand ) to the UK.

I have checked the defra website, and am just confused at the amount of info,

My understanding is that IF we were to go back, and as she is a thai dog we would arrange for her to fly over, and she would be put in quarantine for 6 months.

She is a 13 week old shihtzu and will be full vaccinated inc. rabies by the 13th jan.

I have emailed defra, but wondered if anyone has done this recently, who did you use? do you use a specialist company and how much did this cost you in total? and how much is quarantine.

I am just asking so we are fully prepared in the event of going home, as I refuse to leave her here or rehome her.

thanks!

Hi there, good to hear that someone is going to take there dog with them, so many strays here.

Ok there is a company called Crown who deal with this (they speak good English number can be found on the net.

Your dog has to go to the airport usally best to do this about2 wks before u go, to make sure everything is ok.Vet check there and papers given(cost about 200 thb time about 2 hrs waiting for paper)

Crown will tell you more.

If you want more advise i suggest u drop a line to a dog Charity called Scad in Bangkok they will able to give u advise.

Your dog will have to go into quarantine for 6mnths (expensive) but a friend sent her dogs to France for the qurantine period (as this was a much better quarantine experiance for the dogs)not sure how much it costs.

Ihope this hels a little, good luck to you and your dog.

Another option is to go to Malaysia for three months, have the dog regularly checked by a registered vet, then you can apply for a dog passport, no quarantine. If the animals vaccines are all up to date you may be able to reduce the quarantine time in the UK substantually after a few blood tests.

Check out the Embassy web site, it gives info on which brands of vaccine are acceptable and further info on which other countries you can get pet passports from.

thanks so much for the above replies :o

I will give the mentioned companies a call soon. With regards to malaysia, I have emailed the vets department and looked on their site for info. Maybe an option for us to go there if we are ok with visas and can find suitable places to live etc for 3 months. have you any idea how much the quarantine would be cut down?

As she is so young at the moment im not keen on the idea of her being away from us for 6 months, so any other idea will be considered, so malaysia is looking a possibility.

Anyway thansk again and ill keep researching

From the websites I've visited, quarantine could be reduced to as little as two weeks.

That's really helpful thanks, you couldn't find a link could you. I have looked but the websites are like mazes. We are seriously considering going to Malaysia for 3 maybe 6 months money dependant.

The only other thing we have thought of, is that the dog hasn't been micro-chipped yet but the defra website says that she should get one fitted BEFORE the rabies injection...however are Thailand's micro-chips recognised by EU readers?(I can't find any info on this) and what if we got her rabies injection next week as planned and then can she get a booster in Malaysia (as the Uk will prefer one from there I imagine) so soon after getting her first jab?

Sorry for the all of the questoins but none of these gov websites are replying :o

Thank you for your e-mail received on the 5th January 2009. Please be advised that once your pet enters Malaysia, it will need to be prepared for the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS). This process generally takes around seven months to complete. For a dog to enter (or return to) the UK as part of PETS and thus avoid quarantine, the following procedures must be carried out in the stated order:

1). The dog must be micro-chipped,

2). Then it must be vaccinated against rabies, and

3). Then a blood sample must be taken and sent to an European Union (EU) approved laboratory for testing. If the required level of antibodies is reached, the dog may enter the UK 6 calendar months after the date that the sample was drawn, assuming that all other rules of the scheme are met.

Please note that steps 2 and 3 above must be carried out in a PETS qualified country (Malaysia).

Further to this, pets must be treated against ticks and tapeworm not less than 24 hours and not more than 48 hours before checking in with a PETS authorised carrier (on a PETS approved route), for the journey that brings the pet into the UK.

The document required is a Third country official veterinary certificate. It is headed “Veterinary certificate for domestic dogs, cats and ferrets entering the European Community for non-commercial movements (Regulation (EC) No 998/2003)”. An example form (as opposed to certificate) is attached. Your vet may need to contact the local veterinary authorities to obtain the certificate.

For further information on how to prepare your pet for export to the UK under the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS), including documentary requirements and approved routes and carriers, please see the link below:
