I remember well a few years back I was up-country, and some old woman who could well have been in her 70's was wearing one of those spoof coke T-Shirts that actually said "I like cock".

I just didn't have the heart to tell her.

Maybe she was on the 'hunt' for a farang sugardaddy!

Or maybe - like me - she is a Tottenham Hotspur fan!

It's not just the Thais that wear shirts proclaiming identities unknown to the wearer. Generally I wear polo shirts but also have a small stock of tee shirts for slobbing around in. I don't bother much what they say as long as they DON"T say Thailand or Pattaya or Bangkok or similar. So I just go down the market negotiate a price and buy half a dozen all light colours with some motif/logo on.

So Saturday I'm wearing a white Fox tee shirt whilst I'm wandering around town. I end up in Scrooge pub in Itaewon for a few beers and a game of pool. This American guy goes nuts asking me things like "Wow man, are you really into all the extreme biking stuff?" . Well I haven't a cooking flue what he's on about but once he's explained the relevance of Fox I let him know as far as I'm concerned it's only a <deleted>' tee shirt .

It's still only a tee shirt. I did also once have a Billabong shirt but that went to the great laundry in the sky (aka the charity bin) some months back.

It's incredible you say that about the Fox tee shirt because I have one too and I have had dirty looks and even a few comments like Bush lover and that is a Fascist news agency. The left is so left now that soon right handed people will be banned.

the ones ive seen for sale are all small sizes.

ive even seen "watty" and his missus in samui before when i lived there.

the exploited, dead kennedys and ramones etc were great bands that get hammered to death still on my i tunes... thats another thread tho!

I suggest it might be more profitable to wear T-shirts in Arabic script than it is to wear exploited T-shirts in English ! The following report was on the news today.

240,000 dollars awarded to man forced to cover Arab T-shirt NEW YORK – An airline passenger forced to cover his T-shirt because it displayed Arabic script has been awarded 240,000 dollars in compensation, campaigners said Monday.

Raed Jarrar received the pay out on Friday from two US Transportation Security Authority officials and from JetBlue Airways following the August 2006 incident at New York's JFK Airport, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced.

"The outcome of this case is a victory for free speech and a blow to the discriminatory practice of racial profiling," said Aden Fine, a lawyer with ACLU.

Jarrar, a US resident, was apprehended as he waited to board a JetBlue flight from New York to Oakland, California, and told to remove his shirt, which had written on it in Arabic: "We will not be silent."

He was told other passengers felt uncomfortable because an Arabic-inscribed T-shirt in an airport was like "wearing a T-shirt at a bank stating, I am a robber,'" the ACLU said.

Jarrar eventually agreed to cover his shirt with another provided by JetBlue. He was allowed aboard but his seat was changed from the front to the back of the aircraft.

Saw a Ramones T shirt in Phetchabon, same story, only small sizes, unfortunately.

Once bought some Bob Marley T shirts that looked like they'd fit me.....but when worn, there was a gap where my belly stuck out. Gave my Thai nieces & nephews a great laugh though. Still, Ok for gardening in.

I think it's just cool to have a T-shirt with English words on it... and it doesn't matter what the words are or what (if anything) they mean...

A friends 9 year old daughter was wearing a shirt that said "F#CK OFF YOU WANK3RS" or something very similar... until I explained to the mother what it meant...

I taught a small class of kids at a private tutition school and one of the 14 or 15 year old boys used to wear a tee-shirt with a book on it. In very bold letters on the book was written:

"Blow Jobs for Dummies"

I never could bring myself to explain it to him (or his parents). He was at that age where I am sure he would have been mortified to know what it meant!

You're partly correct. "Sawat dee" comes from the Sanskrit word "svasti." The word "khaa" in Thai is just a feminine politeness particle added to the end of sentences, like its masculine counterpart, "khrap." These politeness particles have nothing to do with the word "svasti," and it is just a coincidence that the "khaa" in "sawat dee khaa" makes the word appear even more similar to "swastika" than simply "svasti".

The swastika symbol as used by the Nazi Party of Germany is unrelated to the Thai usage, and derived from a different form of the same word, "svastika."

So yes, "sawat dee" shares a common background with "swastika", but the Thai word "khaa" does not.

คะ or ค่ะ "kha" is a shortened form of ขา "khaa" which is a word used by a woman after a person's name when addressing them. It is also used for acknowledgement, or to answer "yes" to a question. It's origins are probably in the word จ๋า "jaa," which is from the Khmer language and is also the feminine word for "yes."

You didn't ask about its male counterpart ครับ "khrap," but I'm sure you already know that it comes from ขอรับกระผม "khor rap kra phom," which is often contracted to ครับผม "khrap phom," or more commonly abbreviated to just ครับ "khrap".

For many years I've seen Thai people wearing Exploited t-shirts with "punks not dead" on them. I've asked maybe 100 wearers if they know the band and not one of them do. None of them seem interested to know that I knew them and just laugh when I tell them about the time the lead singer smashed a beer bottle over my head

Why on earth do they wear them, I really want to know? Anarchism is not tha big in Thailand.

I don't think it's political to them. I always wondered who listened to bands like that.

I was at Jatujak Market last time I was in Thailand and I was looking for a shirt with the type of design that you see in those Thai and Khmer sak yant tattoos. I could only find a few, and only in child sizes or with too much flashy imagery on it (I just want the plain old sak yant pattern).

Finally, after asking several vendors about it, one of them told me that it would be very offensive to walk around Thailand wearing a shirt like that, because that type of image has great religious significance to Thai people. He then tried to liken it to a person walking around America wearing a shirt with a picture of Jesus on it. Of course, that would actually not be a problem in America, but that wasn't relevant to his point.

Have any of you heard this too?
