PM Abhisit: Weekly TV talk show may begin mid-January

BANGKOK: -- Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva may start his Sunday television talk beginning January 18 to inform the people regarding the performance of his government, Minister to the Prime Minister's Office Satit Wonghnongtaey said on Thursday.

Mr. Satit said the television talk show will be telecast from 9am every Sunday on the state-owned TV Channel NBT.

The weekly programme will focus on the government's performance and will not attack anti-government groups, he said.

Reiterating the coalition government's policy on allowing opposition parties to present their views on political affairs on television, Mr. Satit said approval would be given if the opposition leader in the House of Representatives wishes to speak but he or she must be "responsible for the content."

So far His Majesty the King has not royally appointed the leader of the opposition bloc in the House and, thus it is better to wait for the appointment, Mr. Satit added.

Agreed. The perfect thing would be a government/opposition debate, or perhaps something akin to PMQs in the UK (if such a parliamentary discourse doesn't already exist).

This administration seems to me to be a bit of a "same same but different" one from the PPP. Same same but different banned politicians involved in its setting-up; same same but different coalition partners; same same but different economic stimulus packages; same same but different internet censorship policies; same same but different PV temple policy, and now a same same but different "speak unto the nation" initiative.

Ah, how "Thai".

Except this is the first government ever that invited opposition to have air time, too.

And for having the same policies and politicians - so much for "deep ideological divide" that doesn't exist.

I am sure it will also be air on ASTV, minus the opposition part.

I'm interested in hearing in his first tv talk he'll say what he will do to PAD leaders within the month. No reason to delay further. What PAD did was clearly seen by the whole world.

What he and his party do best is to have nice talks and to create good image. In fact they don't do what they say.

Fully agree Sam, Palin was a joke, at the least in that she unfortunately allowed herself to be used- but in this case, at least the Thai PM is starting a necessary process, may it continue.

Well the leader of the opposition wont be responding any time soon because nobody wants the job.

It is however a positive development that the opposition be given airtime. Now they should sort their act out and decide who is going to be that person.
