My cd/dvd burner in my desktop has developed some kind of weird problem. It occurred when I put in an older DVD to play, the DVD ended up being scratched and stopped playing. After that, ithe burner no longer sees any DVD that I put in (much less plays), but can see and read, as well as burn CD's.

Is this fixable or do I need a new cd/dvd burner?

Don't try to repair because is money on the loose!

Just buy a new one and think that if any problems come after Warranty to buy a new again! Cost is just 800-900 THB.

Yup ^^^, time for a new one :o

Sounds like the DVD laser is busted. It IS actually probably repairable, as to whether this would be cost-effective...... well, I wouldn't bother.

Before you bin it, try cleaning the lens with a soft brush, you never know your luck :D

So, the DVD laser and the CD laser aren't the same thing then?

OK, time for a new one, thanks for the advice :o

I wouldn't throw it away before checking the software. I had a similar problem and had to dig out the DVD player disk that came with the drive and install a new program. It played CD's fine but not DVD's.

Odd thing was, it was playing a DVD, which seemed to be scratched about half way. Took the DVD out and from then on it not only did not play DVD discs it doesn't even see them.

It's one module with two lasers (different wavelengths).
