Where/how To Test A Child For A Learning Disability

I have a niece who despite being very clever, has struggled academically for years. My sister, who just visited and who works as an occupational therapist for kids with problems back in Canada, thought that the girl might have an undiagnosed LD and suggested getting her tested.

Has anyone had any experience with this sort of thing? I think that typically education psychologists perform these types of tests, but I'm not sure where to find any of these professionals here.

Any advice or info would be welcomed.

Thanks,

John

I have been looking for someone who could diagnotised me with LD for ages here in CM but haven't found yet so I gave up my search, figured out I'll do a diagnosis back in my country. However, the best hospital here in CM where they are more chance of founding someone who knows his job would be Chiangmai University! Maybe go there to check it out, asking around! PS: please don't go to chiangmai RAM hospital for a psychologist or specialist, they are the worst doctors I have seen in my life. The so called 'sleep specialist' when I asked him for a sleep test he said that sleep test was only for snoring and sleep apnea!

Also I am not sure if it's very known here in Thailand, I asked my thai teacher who used to teach kids with ADHD about places here in thailand but she said they aren't many and she doesn't know any here in CM. .

Wish the best :o

When I taught at one of the largest matayom schools in northern Thailand, a former exchange student returned and mentioned that she had always had dyslexia. The ajarns there had not heard of dyslexia. Maybe one of the international schools has a trained psychologist or educational psychometrist. I have met several neurologists at Sripat, including a sleep disorder specialist, but I know of no learning disability specialist.

Try to get more info from your sister from Canada as to what prompted her suspicion of the learning disability. If she suspects ADD, at least one doctor at Sripat prescribves Rubifen (Ritalin), but that is a controversial drug and is sometimes mis-prescribed or mis-diagnosed.

We have a couple of tutors that come for a couple of hours a week to give our children an extra little help. The wife first noticed that our 8 yr old daughter was just not makeing the connection between the written word and the spoken word and her grades were suffering.

One of the tutors had a daytime job with the mental health hospital and some background in psychology and she suggested that our daughter had a LD [learning disability].

I immediately googled it and found several online sites that had 'quick tests' with general symptoms and sure enough, our daughter seemed to have a for of dislexia and the websites offered several English courses for big $'s to cure it.

On the advise of the tutor, we just persisted with the tutoring and drilled her in Thai reading and writing skills and eventually her grades improved.

I learned that dislexia is not really curable, but the person can and does compensate for it in other ways and is sometimes more intelegent than others. many famous and successful people have it and succede in life.

A good overview of dislexia can be found on wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dislexia along with a list of famous people who have had it

My son is 8 and has ADHD and Dyslexia. I didn't get much help diagnosing him here but the internet was abounding with resources. Some doctors seem to think there is a link between Dyslexia and an inner ear problem, especially if the child has auditory dyslexia and trips often, (which my son does). We started giving him a Dramamine every morning along with Fish Oil, Ginkgo Biloba, Ginseng, and a Centrum. After a couple weeks we saw an amazing difference. I also highly recommend home-school for a dyslexic child for many reasons but most of all because the one on one attention can not be matched in any school or by any tutor and can keep them at their best without the astigmatism and discouragements they would get in school.
