Sick Of The Shared Internet Connection In My Bk Aptmt Bldg

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

As the title of the thread says: I'm sick of my building's terribly slow shared internet connection and am looking into the alternatives.

My landlord won't allow me to put my own private line in so I intially thought that something like iPStar would be the way to go. Then I found out the price and read all the negative comments here. So, I won't be going the iPStar route!

Next I learned about CAT CDMA, but then found out a) It's not available in BK :o It's not suitable for p2p or Torrents.

So, now, I'm looking into the pheasability of getting my own connection piped in using the building's existing comms lines. Am I correct in assuming that this is viable?

Can anyone advise what info do I need from my landlord (apart from who owns the line and who is the building's ISP?)

Many thx in advance

GPRS is reliable but slow. cheap also. I use it for emergencies when my lines go down.

you need to first talk to whoever handles the technical side for your landlord. If you are lucky, it will be an individual and not a faceless company. Sweeten him up, and then ask if he can get you your own line, and you will make it worth his while with an extra monthly tip. Be generous. This is what I did and we got two extra dedicated lines even run through the bloody apartment roof for us, just for being charming and patient and paying a little over the odds.

Do you get a bill from the phone company for your current phone line or does the landlord bill you? If you get your own bill from the phone company seems like you could then pick whatever internet provider that services your phone line/phone company (i.e., TOT, True, etc). But then again, I don't know what type of phone system may exist in our condo building (i.e., standalone/individual lines or shared lines), but you seem to describe a shared line/phone number extension setup.

Depending on your internet service provider, ADSL can sometimes be slow on a standalone phone like feeding individual houses due to User-to-ADSL circuit Ratio's (i.e., a 10 to 1 ratio, 50 to 1 ratio, etc) used by all internet providers in Thailand...this depends on your internet provider. So, if your condo has some type of shared phone circuit (like you may have) then it sounds like you have "two" internet access sharing situations (i.e., the User to ADSL circuit ratio of the internet provider and then the added bottleneck of condo phone/DSL sharing) which impacts your internet speed.

All I can say is I tried TOT internet for a few months and switched due to unpredictable speed; I've now been with JI-NET approaching two months on my TOT phone line and the internet speed to international and inside-Thailand web sites has been steady/fast. What internet service provider you can signup with will depend on the phone company providing your number...and of course condo/landlord rules.
