Switching From Non-imm O (ed) To Tourist

Hi all,

Canadian, 28 years old here, with some questions:

I'm holding a Non Imm O (ED) single entry visa but will be stopping language study and looking for work. This means dropping down to entry visa status for a while before obtaining a work permit.

- Do I need to leave the country and reenter?

- Does the 15-day rule apply?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Leave the country and return. By Land 15 days. By Air 30 days.

Or apply for a Tourist Visa from a Thai Consulate in a neigbouring country. 60 days + 30 days extension.

Note that as long you are not on an extension of stay from the immirgation office, your permission to stay in Thailand remains valid. Not going to school anymore only means you cannot get extensions. If you are already on an extension then your permission to stay expires when you stop going to school.

Actually I do have another question ...

My language school studies will end merely a week after I get my 90 extension, thus leaving a surplus of almost 3 months to ride around on an Non-Imm O (ED) visa while not actually attending school.

Is this ok? Or do the authorities expect that I cancel my visa shortly after studies end?

An extension of stay is cancelled when the reason why the extension was given no longer exist. So yes, you would have to leave.

I'm in a similar situation with an extension of stay and the HR manager at the co. I've just left is insisting that there's no problem to stay on for the term of the extension (although it's technically illegal), as immigration won't be notified that I've quit, only the labor dept. when he returns my work permit. The way I see it, factoring in the costs of a trip out of the country and the probable chance I'll get away with it I'm taking the risk. Maybe I'll regret it later ... !

You should perhaps be careful here. I was also in a similar situation recently, but was informed that immigration will eventually also be notified in the chain of events. Furthermore, the accountant at my previous work that handled all the work permit and visa related affairs, also assured me that I could stay in Thailand for the duration of my extension, after having quite my job. This is wrong. When you quit a job, your extension of stay ends the same day that you quit your job and you have to leave the country within 24 hours. For 1900 baht you can extend your stay to 7 days at immigrations.

Getting caught with overstay (unless reporting it yourself or upon exiting Thailand) is a pretty serious deal, from what I read here at ThaiVisa.

Personally I left Thailand to enter on a new visa. It's not a big deal if you take a visa tour service.
