Have recently done a clean Windows XP install. If I had known it was going to take so long and get so complicated I probably wouldn’t have bothered :o but here I am with one particular annoying problem. Thai language seems to have taken over part of the computer.

I first notice when I went to install Nero 8. This is a copy of Nero that I had downloaded from the official web site and had installed previously. The install process was all in Thai, this did not happen the first time I installed it on the old disk. Anyway got the good lady to translate for me, this wasn’t straightforward as I only wanted to install the basic burning stuff without all the bloated extras and the technical translation was sometimes tricky to work out. So we after we go Nero up and running were able to change the language to English. Seems a bit daft to only be able to change the language after installation. :D

I thought this was just a one off with the Thai but I noticed that those funny .tex files that come with some downloads that have non standard characters those are now in Thai also. Notice in example 2 all the non English/US characters are Thai, they didn’t used to be.

I also got Thai when installing another program, forget now which one as that install was not complicated and just clicking the highlighted buttons finished the install.

None of the programs that are throwing up Thai were bought here in Thailand all were downloaded internationally from the Internet so I can’t see why they would not start in English.

I have my computer set up with English US as the first language and Thai s the second with the little changeover icon down near the clock. Same set up as on the old setup and did not have this problem then.

Any helpful ideas most wecome.

Hi Webfact

The files are marked as "MSInfo Document" If you just click on them you get an error message and the System Info window opens. You have to right click on it and choose open with Notepad to get the "Message". The thing is that I have opened lots of these files Usually containing some self promoting bumpf but only since the new install am I getting the Thai characters. This is not a big deal, though if I keep getting legit programs insisting on communicating in Thai it could be.

I feel there is some setting on the computer that is favoring the Thai language that I would like to change. :o

these are .nfo files. Right klick on a file and open with "notepad" or open with "view" lister.

As far as I understand your systems language hasn't chanced. So in my humble opinion these files are "Pantip" files, which are included with certain kind of software you can buy over there... The first image indicates that to me. Guess it comes from China and your system (code page) can't display it. As long as it is not an .exe file and you have clicked on it... or your system has changed entirely to Chinese, Tamil or Thai, I wouldn't care about that-

my second guess is you was redirected to a Thai download location because your DNS has identified your location as Thailand.

Hmmmm as I said not really worried about those files I just put them out as an example. I'm more concerned about programs that I'm reloading onto my new hard drive that suddenly only have menus in Thai. Like the Nero example I gave, this is the same program I had on the old drive and it was all in English when I installed it there :o

Start>Control Panel>Regional and Language Options>Advanced Tab>'Select a language of the language version of the non-Unicode programs you want to use' - make sure this is set to 'English' not 'Thai' when installing programs, to prevent install dialogue menus appearing in Thai.

No probs. You'll need to set it back to Thai afterwards if you have the Thai keyboard installed and want to type in Thai.

That's weird, thought all was well and didn't think to check Thai typing input. Tried to change the language (icon down near the clock) and could not get it to work in Thai. Changed the setting back to Thai (in advanced) and got the Thai characters again but the keyboard would now accept Thai input. Weird did not have problem before and needing to reboot at every language change is a real pain. :D

When I change from Thai/Eng/Thai in advanced settings it gives the option of using the files already on the computer or inserting the installation disk to copy the files again. The first couple of times I just went with the already installed files but then with nothing to loose inserted the CD and used the copy those files option. This seems to have done the trick as the keyboard now types in both Eng and Thai and hopefully won't have install menues come up in Thai anymore.

So hopefully all is well now :o

Thanks Katana, :o your a genius. I was having similar problems when I went to some google setting, like google adwords, adsense ever gmail. I was getting all Thai letters. I just checked my settings in my control panel, and it said Thai. I switched it to English and viola. Thanks again.
