Small vendors in Nakhon Si Thammarat up against Tesco expansion

By The Nation

Small vendors in Tambon Chandee, Nakhon Si Thammarat's Chawang district, vowed to further fight against Tesco Lotus's plan to open a new branch despite a result of a public hearing.

The municipality's public hearing, conducted during October 14-November 10 by Rajabhat University Nakhon Si Thammarat, showed that 84.70 per cent of respondents favoured the expansion. On the positive side, the new branch would increase the variety of products and services to the village and its neighbourhood. However, the disadvantages are vendors in fresh markets and small retailers would be affected.

A vendor in Chandee Market said the public hearing result is peculiar, given that nearly all vendors in the market opposed the expansion. He said that if the municipality approves the construction of Tesco Lotus, the community would fight back.
