Microsoft Test Updates In Windows 7 Beta 7000

Microsoft test updates in Windows 7 Beta 7000

Starting February 24, we will be releasing up to 5 test updates to PCs running the Windows 7 Beta (Build 7000) via Windows Update.

These updates allow us to test and verify our ability to deliver and manage the updating of Windows 7. We typically verify servicing scenarios during a beta.

Windows 7 Beta users will be notified that new updates are available beginning February 24 through Windows Update. Even if the user has Windows Update configured for automatic update – these test updates will not install automatically. Users will need to manually install the test updates through Windows Update.

These updates do not deliver new features or bug fixes. The test updates simply replace system files with the same version of the file currently on the system.

Thanks for the info. I don't like much about Vista or Windows 7. WinXp is still the best OS, IMO. :o

I have the Build 7000 beta installed, and just yesterday decided to spend some more time testing it. First thing I did was head to Windows Update, and got error messages saying my version of Windows was not supported by Windows Update.

I realize there were more recent Builds released and missed the deadline to download them, so figured I was simply going to be out of the loop by continuing to test Build 7000.

Now, Reimar posts saying that updates to Build 7000 will be available via Windows Update starting Feb 24. What's going on? :o

(Next time I boot back to Win7 I'll try to remember to post the error number and message I get from Windows Update.)

Okay, coming to you live from Windows 7, Build 7000, and here's the low down:

Today when I booted Win7. I was greeted with a screen requiring me to (re-)activate Windows and the version number on the lower left of the desktop proclaimed I was not using a genuine version of Windows. After clicking through a couple screens to (re-)activate, I was greeted with a desktop without the proclamation about a non-genuine version of Windows *AND* I was able to use Windows Update to download six critical updates.

So, I guess this was "one of those beta things" where I probably should have been prompted to (re-)activate yesterday, but since I wasn't and I didn't, Windows Update/Genuine Advantage check wouldn't let me check for updates.

I keep saying "activate" with a prefix of (re-), because I'm 99% certain that I had activated Win7 when I installed it.

Anyway, all is seemingly well over here now. :-)
