A recent post pointed out the strong chances of denial of boarding for a one-way ticket to Thailand.

What about on a return ticket?

On the day my visa expires, I will leave Bangkok for Phnom Penh, then return to Bangkok the second day after. I don't plan to get a Thai visa while I'm in Cambodia.

My plan is to re-enter Thailand on a 30-day permission to stay, and before there are only 21 days left, apply in-country for a non-imm and one-year extension on retirement. I already have 800,000 baht stashed in a time deposit for more than three months.

Since I won't have an outbound ticket from Thailand, will Bangkok Airways at the PP airport refuse to let me board? If I show my application for a retirement extension and my bank passbook showing my 800,000 baht balance, will that work?

This almost happened to me once recently. I flew to Manila on a Philippine airline and when I went to check in for my return flight to Bangkok, the girl at the counter looked at my passport and asked if I had an ongoing ticket. I told her I lived in Bangkok and showed her my re-entry permit. She didn't even apologize. The other times I went to Manila, I also showed the girl at the counter the re-entry permit so I wouldn't be asked anything.

This is a good question and I don't think your experience is going to be fully predictable. Back in my visa runner days a few years ago, I was questioned at Bangkok starting at RT trip to Malaysia. They asked me to show them my air ticket out of Thailand. This was the beginning of the trip, not the second leg. From Malaysia and Singapore returning in a RT I have never been asked anything. Obviously, a reentry permit should satisfy anyone asking but you don't have one now.

If you are asked starting in Bangkok I would tell a white lie and say I am applying for a visa in Cambodia. If questioned from Cambodia, all you can do is tell them your story, that you are in the process of applying for a visa. Hard to say the result IF they ask.

I flew in and out of Bangkok about 30+ times last year, all originating and returning to Bangkok without another outbound ticket. The only time I was asked for the outbound ticket was at Sydney on Thai Airways. When I explained that I visit my girlfriend when not travelling, really been living here for 12 months, and since I travel frequently I will buy my next ticket out from Bangkok when I know my schedule. I was told this is not possible by the checkin desk so I mentioned I have a credit card with funds for a ticket in bangkok. She checked with her manager and there was no problem.

I think by offering that information up front it showed that I have travelled this route before.

I'm curious. What do you think she should have apologized for? For doing her job?

I understood that 10years talked about his check-in at the airline counter in Manila for his return flight to Bangkok. Doing her job by the book, the check-in lady verified that the traveller without a confirmed onward flight out of Thailand had a valid visa. The re-entry permit is not easily recognisable to all as the equivalent of a visa for the purpose of travel to Thailand.

Arrived from Phnom Penh on Wednesday, got a 30-day entry stamp. No questions asked anywhere (leaving BKK, arriving PNH, leaving PNH, arriving BKK).
