sumrit
The reason i was doing the passport was because it has just 1 year before it expires. Assuming she gets her visa in 12 months time when it expires she will get the replacement from Tthai embassy. The only issue i believe is that they dont copy over the visa is that right? this emans she will then need to carry both passports with her when travelling ? Also is the cost of a thai passport in the uk the same as getting one done in BKK? When she obtains a new passport then she would either have to pay to have any current UK visa/leave to remain stamp transferred or, as you say, carry both old and new passports with her. 1. When my wife changed the name in her Thai passport they didn't give her a new passport, they simply put a name change stamp in her old one. (She was doing a five year renewal and they didn't give her a new passport, just put a renewal stamp in the old one.) However, this was before biometric passports, so it may be different now. 2. Whether your wife could actually apply for a new passport in her married name when her current one still has 12 months validity, I don't know. 3. I can't remember the prices for renewal in BKK or at the RTE in London, but I do remember that doing it at the RTE is more expensive; but still cheap compared to the cost of renewing a British passport! From Supporting documents You should include original documents, particularly those relating to birth, marriage, divorce and death. If you are not able to include originals of these then you should send attested copies. You should submit original documents with a photocopy of each original document. If you do not include photocopies of original documents, your original documents may not be returned to you. Your wife doesn't have to get a new passport now, she can have a five year extension put in her existing passport at the Thai Embassy in London when it's due to expire, so she's effectively got six years left if she wants to do it that way. 1. If doing a name change in Thailand they now issue a new passport. Not sure if it's the same if the name change is done at a Thai Embassy. 2. Yes you can, my wife got a new passport in her married name at the Bangkok passport office a few weeks after we married even though there was nearly two years left on her old one. 3. I'm sure it was 1000 baht in Bangkok, the same price as a new/replacement passport. I can't remember the costs at the Embassy in London.

nakmuay1
Sorry to hijack this thread but i'm new to this forum and quite new to computers too. My problem is i don't even know which form to print off for my wife to apply for a visa, i thought it was the VAF4 but i'm reading posts that say this application can only be made online, is this true? Ive been with my wife for 6 years but got married last month and heard that there is a visa which , if granted, gives her 2 years and allows her to work. It doesn't seem to say anything on the VAF4 about applying for the 2 years, is this just common knowlege that you apply for settlement and they give you 2 years or do you have to ask specifficlly. The last thing i want to do is to give a visa agent any money but i'm falling at the first hurdle, please help. thtanks in advance.
7by7
Sreverino, one is a blank form for you to print out and fill in, the other is an example of a completed form. Nakmuay1, there are several categories of settlement application, but they all apply using form VAF4A. You can complete it online and make an appointment to hand in documents and have biometrics taken, or you can complete it by hand and then turn up and wait. The form of settlement your wife requires is commonly referred to as a spouse visa. It lasts for 2 years after which she can, assuming she meets the necessary criteria, apply to stay in the UK indefinitely; if she doesn't meet the criteria for this she can apply for a further 2 years stay. Question 8.1 on the form asks 'On what basis are you going to the UK?' so by specifying 'spouse' here they will know what type of visa to issue her. Feel free to ask any questions you need to, but may I suggest that you start a new topic? Posting your questions in this thread means they may get lost and not be responded to! Chris1616
!!! SUCCESS !!! Handed the visa in on a Friday afternoon on the 18th so waited just over 4 weeks. Not trying to brag just trying to give some hope to some people waiting or thinking of applying. We've only known each other for 15 months (married 1 month ago ) living in a self contained flat in my father's home. She is 29 and I'm only 23 so I'm not super rich or anything. She did 6 months in England on a tourist visa during this time and I did 3 trips to Thailand for around 5 weeks each time so i guess that helped. She does have land/car/bike etc but I'm not sure if that matters when it's a settlement visa. I promised to myself that i would provide a post listing everything i used for my Tourist visa because i mainly used posts from this site but i never got around to it but some time during the next few weeks i will make one for the settlement visa i used. When we applied we put the travel date for the 22nd of October and we got the visa on the 22nd i guess that was just lucky. I also used printed forms when i applied so i guess you dont need to worry about doing it online. Looks like the waiting times might be finally coming down ! drink75
Well, hello all. You might remember us from the list of March applications where we waited 13 weeks and got a refusal for our fiance visa. Now we are back, re-applied for a settlement visa yesterday as my girl and I got married a couple months back. Can't say it's good to be back on this forum but must say I have missed it strangely enough! We have used an agent this time although we know there really was not any point, just some piece of mind that if we fail again, it's not my fault! I felt very guilty last time when we got refused when I had to explain to my partner that we got refused because I am self employed and failed to prove my income well enough. Ho Hum, live and learn. Fingers crossed this time around! I, and I'm sure everybody else who was around waiting when you were here last time, have our fingers crossed for you both, and yes it's nice to see the waiting times slowly coming back down to a more realistic time. Even though we've been in the UK for over three months now I still drop into this thread regularly, old habits die hard I suppose :D
HowardJohnson
Notification on website today that the application is ready to collect. Of course, no indication if it has been approved or not. bobrussell
Much of the anger and frustration seems to go when the application process is completed efficiently!!! Even those refused can deal with things more positively if they have not been caught in a queue for months. Shame it was such a long time for us!! Hopefully the progress will be maintained and fewer of us will have to put lives on hold for months at a time. Congratulations to those who have had visas granted - keep plugging away for those that have received refusals. I suspect most people that take the trouble to use this forum are genuine applicants and will get the right result in the end. Best of luck! InspectorGadget
We are hitting 4 weeks now we had one returned today. Hello everyone Submitted Visa applications 5th October Collected approved visas 5th November Holy Cr*p! I wasn't it expecting it to be that quick but I am delighted! Our plan was for the wife and step-son to be in the UK for xmas which we can now do. If we hadn't put date of travel as 12th December on the application form, they could have been here even earlier. Was woken up at 4am this morning from the wife saying the visas were ready for collection and I couldn't get back to sleep after that! so so happy and good luck to all those still waiting and thank you to this site as it was full of great information that really helped us. Like some of the others i tend to pop in here once in a while to see how things are going now. Good to see the timescales are reducing finally. With luck you will both be over here before Christmas. One warning. Get her a good thick warm coat and nice warm shoes/boots.
steverino
Hey Fluidfusion, I'm really interested to know how much you put your income as on being self employed when you were refused.....I'm in the same boat myself. I heard of a guy the other day who put £800 a month due to worrying the tax people would find out...he was refused. I've just done the wedding after being 4 years together and now just waiting for some extra papers from Nakhon and probably will submit on Monday or Tuesday. I'll add myself to the list when I've done it. Any way I wish you luck this time. hey Jack...you submitted yet? I'm booked to fly on the 30th but that's within 4 weeks, so I doubt we'll all make it. I'll get her to fly to Dubai and I'll meet her there from Glasgow...if successful!

I am still going on the same dates but I will be sending the mrs for her TB scan next week rather than waiting for me to arrive. I dont want to delay anything as i am only coming for 11 days on the next trip. I have also decided not to change her ID card / passport into the married name as this will hold things up by at least 2/3 days. The thing that is worrying me is even though I have had the affimation to marry legalized by the foreign office here in the UK do i really need to get the british consular to stamp it or can I go direct to the TMFA? (Thai Ministry Foreign affairs) and not bother with the consular. Does anyone else know if this is possible or do i need the consular stamp. How long you in LOS for Steve? maybe meet up for a beer
7by7
Unfortunately Thai law requires the AFM to be signed in front of a consular official at the British embassy in Bangkok or Honorary Consul in Chiang Mai or Pattaya. It is not acceptable to obtain the affirmation from the United Kingdom in advance. See General Guidance for British Nationals wishing to marry in Thailand from the RTE in London and the same from the British embassy in Bangkok.
