On behalf of a friend without Internet.

In the case of someone enjoying a long time out from the U.K. and

staying in Nakhon Nowhere with his girlfriend. When asked if you're

interested in part-time teaching at a school in one of the countrys

poorer provinces - how do you stand with immigration, with letter

from the school does it give you automatic extention........

Yes. To work you need a work permit. A blind eye may be turned but it sure is not going to get you any positive visa considerations (automatic extension).

Yes. A blind eye might be turned, unless you upset someone and they decide to report you.

As said you need a Work Permit to do any kind of work.

Will forward all advice, Thanks...

You'd think that even Thailand would welcome such a gesture, especially

to an area with no European teachers. Was told that if he took a letter

from the school to Immigration stating clearly that he was giving his time

for no financial reward that he'd be covered.

Didn't want to be punished for doing a good deed..... Ce La Vie.....

Nothing to do with Immigration. It is the Department of Employment. http://www.doe.go.th/service3_en.aspx

This is what they say.

1. Definition

“Alien” means a natural person who is not of Thai nationality; “ Work ” means to engage in work by exerting energy or using knowledge whether or not in consideration of wages or other benefits.

Yes, he needs a WP. It isn't that difficult to get, especialy for a government school and will cost 3,100 baht.

As a volunteer he might be able to get an extension of stay from immigration if he has a letter from the school and a WP. Some offices now also require a teachers license. So have the school talk with immigration first to see if they can help him.

WP is needed for work, paid or unpaid. If you are shopped, you are in schtuck!!

Yup

Jailed and then deported!!

Undercutting a Thai English teacher and causing him/her to be unemployed by working for nothing is wrong so to is preventing the job being offered to a Thai person who can speak a required level of English.
