Actually, right after a woman's monthly, there is a drop in her horomone level and a subsequent drop in her sex drive. It's nothing personal; it's just our horomonal structure and doesn't last long, thankfully.

But, why increase sex drive at a time when it's almost impossible to get pregnant? Is this some sort of evolutionary hold-over from mammal cousins being "in heat"?

the othodox jews have it down pat:

only bout 7 days after mestruation the woman can start having sex again (once she has 'purified' herself and there is no spotting etc and yes they check themselves with a little cloth ) then on friday she dresses particularly well, puts an agreed upon signal (like a flower in a vase etc) on her bureau, and voila, they can have sex: count seven to ten days after menstruation.... ovulation theoretically is supposed to start so>>> how many kids do orthodox jews have? lots and lots, every 11 months they get pregnant.....so somewhere at the half way mark is ovulation, you can even feel those little eggs, tweaking in the ovary as they are released to meet their match....

the bible says: be fertile and procreate and it is a requirement for an othodox jewish man to 'procreate' with his lady, usually friday night since it is considered a blessing, but not every night (no sex for fun but enough to keep himself and his wife 'in harmony' ) and if u all check when all your lovely 'juices ' are thick and opaque, that is ovulating time for most healthy and 'regualar' women, (remember the rythm method-- not in/out rythm lift your minds )

and the orthodox women say that this two +week of abstinence (they cant physically touch either so separate beds, hence the flower in vase signal....) makes the heart grow fonder and the sperm grow stronger....i know this becasue every women in israel has to go through 'counselling' by the state rabbinizter (rabbi' wife) before getting the marriage certificate and they go in to little nitty gritty details.....

as for the 'heat' of dogs: the bitch is attractive to males before she can get pregnant, and before she 'wants' to accept the male, for the purpose of getting the dogs worked up which allows time for fighting over her so the strong can win, and also allows time for male dogs to show upfrom around the neighborhood broadening the gene pool possiblilites (more then one male can fertilize a bitch) ; she will accept a male for only three to 9 days and only ovulates then so when doing breeding programs, the male is allowed to mate with the bitch every other day for those days (cause males cant do it every day they'd drop dead ).... the bitch is already not bleeding but just spotting when you start the countdown for breeding....and those are the days that she moves her tail aside and backs up to males

female goats go in heat every 19-21 days and they yell and complain if there is no male around, but no menstruation.....this last for three months and then thats it... for an other year

alpacas only ovulate when the male mounts her and that is every 19 days (no 'heat' ) and that is the only time she will allow him to do the 'dirty' ..... she just lays on the ground, he huffs and puffs and does all the work... sound familiar?

ferrets have a season and the poor things go crazy they get all swollen up and stinky too, but when introduced to a male, the males practically (and sometimes do) kill the females as part of the mating thing....

and pocupines mate every night all year round, at least 8 times a night....and their penises are about a meter long, all this to ensure that his mate will stay with him and not find a porky with something longer.....

so much for mammal evollution

From one of many websites that I found describing the menstrual cycle:

Ovulation occurs only once in every menstrual

cycle, usually around 12 - 16 days before your next period.

Mid cycle is the best time to conceive, but a 4 day slot (sorry for the pun) isn't a lot so there must be ways for ultra strong swimmers to get through before & after this time, as I'm sure no one would be having babies as much as they are?

Um, not necessarily, the egg doesn't always eject itself immediately. Let's face it, if you don't want to have children, there is no good time for sex without condoms.

Well, strictly speaking, her sex-drive has more to do with the combination of horomones than evolution. Also, I think ovualtion is the most likely time to conceive, not the only time.

And also, if female sexual desire was based solely on her ability to conceive, pregannt women would not want sex; and we know that at certain trimesters they are horny as ######. Horomones.
