Newin denies plans to flee verdict

Faction leader Newin Chidchob yesterday lashed out at the red shirts for spreading rumours about him fleeing the country ahead of the verdict on the rubber sapling graft case scheduled for August 17.

"I am Thai by race and nationality and will be present at the court session," he said.

Taking a swipe at former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, who fled the country to elude his conviction and two-year jail term, Newin said he was prepared to abide by the judicial decision regardless of the outcome.

Also, rather deprecatingly, he said he would have reporters take turns in visiting him in jail were he found guilty.

Newin also denied being involved in a campaign to counter the Royal Pardon petition for Thaksin.

Deputy Interior Minister Boonjong Wongtrairat also stepped up in Newin's defence. "I can confirm that he will appear at his verdict session as scheduled," he said.

Boonjong said he was puzzled why rumour-mongers were trying to discredit Newin, and dismissed speculation that the faction leader was trying to influence the judicial outcome by launching a campaign against Thaksin's pardon petition.

The Bhum Jai Thai Party's move against the petition seeking a royal pardon for Thaksin was in no way linked to the judicial review Newin was facing, he said.

With regard to the opposition Pheu Thai Party calling for a probe into Interior Minister Chaovarat Chanweerakul's involvement in moves to counter the petition, he said this was not a big problem, just a political game.

He said the campaign against the petition was designed to raise awareness that the red shirts were misleading the public. Provincial authorities have said that a large number of people in almost every province had put their names down in order to oppose the petition, he said.

Like so many of Thaksin's schemes... poorly thought out... rushed through... and corruptly administered...

Dropouts force big rethink of ODOS

Minister says scheme cannot go on like this

The new version of the One District One Scholarship (ODOS) project will draw up stricter rules for its scholars after nearly 100 students from the project's first two years gave up their decision to pursue an overseas degree and returned to Thailand.

"We may make it a rule that scholars must enroll at top universities and in programmes that respond to the country's needs," Education Minister Wijit Srisa-arn said yesterday. He said such a rule would ensure that the money was well spent.

Launched by the previous administration, the ODOS project has found that many scholars from its first batch were struggling overseas.

In addition to some 90 students heading back to Thailand, 160 others were unsure whether they could complete their overseas undergraduate courses.

About 96 other grantees will also need more time than usual to complete their courses.

When asked why the students could not live up to expectations, Wijit said scholars in their first year were not properly prepared as they were rushed into going abroad.

"Some are children of political canvassers," he added, hinting that they might not be the cream of the provinces.

Wijit said most of the students who had returned to Thailand had now chosen to pursue a university degree in social sciences at private universities in Thailand. "This is not the field the country needs," he said.

Since the interim government came to power late last year, it has renamed the ODOS project the Community Development Scholarship project.

The project will reduce the number of scholars each year and will search for more "qualified" candidates.

Wijit has now asked the Office of the Civil Service Commission and the Office of the Higher Education Commission to draw up detailed reports on the scholars' choices of higher-educational institutes and their fields of study.

"It will not be worth it if the scholars enroll in unwanted courses at substandard institutes," he said.

He said the scholarships were intended to ensure that brilliant students received education at great institutes so that they could make a contribution to the country's development.

Although the scholarship does not require the students to offer their services to the government after their graduation, they are required to return to Thailand.

Under the Surayud government, the program was suspended and scheduled for serious and very necessary revamping.... Now with the Samak government, it's full steam ahead with Thaksin's "scheme"... with his brother-in-law running the 3-card Monte game...

Scholarship scheme to be dusted off

The Education Ministry will dust off the One-District-One-Scholarship (ODOS) scheme in the next academic year with a total of 926 scholarships offered to students from poor families.

Education Minister Somchai Wongsawat said the scheme, suspended by the Surayud government last year, would be revived.

The Cabinet is expected to consider the plan to restart the scheme in the next two weeks. Somchai said once resumed, the ODOS policy would give scholarships to its third batch of recipients since the programme was first started by the Thaksin administration in 2004. About 5.5 Billion Baht from the sale of the digit lottery tickets will be used to finance the scheme, which will be re-launched in May next year.

Poor results put hold on scholarships

Costly populist study scheme under review

The One District-One Scholarship scheme, initially financed by the suspended two- and three-digit lotteries, has been put on hold after many students studying abroad failed to perform well and others quit to marry foreigners. The Education Ministry froze the scheme after it found more than 200 scholarship recipients, undergraduates studying in non-English speaking countries, failed to meet standards.

Some students withdrew from the scholarships after they ended up marrying people they met while abroad. Education Minister Jurin Laksanavisit said the scheme was beset with problems. It had become a financial burden as more than 10 Billion Baht had to be set aside to cover the students' expenses.

It was also a waste of money as many of the students who had chosen to study overseas had to return home to attend local universities because of poor academic performance, Mr Jurin said after chairing a meeting of a committee overseeing the scheme. One of many populist policies launched by the Thaksin Shinawatra government, it was initially

Do you think Newin is nailed?

You do realize if Newin gets nailed, several of Thaksin's Cabinet members and appointees

will get nailed at the same time and the trail of payments may lead to your reddened leader himself.

Newin Goes; most of the rest go too, and they are ALL on your RED team, tootsie roll.

Newin will likely remain in the same positions he is in now.

But bets are good that he will have the balls to STAY in the country and serve his

short stay at a lower class hotel... unlike dear leader Square Red Face.

When a family saves face by buying the child into the next grade,

rather than making them buckle down and LEARN in schoool.

that is familial / School system corruption;

a ) Teaches the kids they can skate by

b ) Leaves them grossly unprepared for western academic life

c ) Generally as a systematic dysfunction lowers the districts grade point

in reality vs world standards even if the district looks OK on Paper vs OTHER districts.

The point being shaving the curve helps no one.

It DOES leave students unprepared for life.

Usable knowledge is not coming from good appearing grades,

it is from actual UNDERSTANDING, not the marks.

This seems greatly confused by face saving parents

and underpaid teachers seeking to make ends meet better....

If in this environment politically connected kids get the scholarship,

rather than the child TESTING the best in real world skills,

we logically get this failingly to launch syndrome in the big world.

Your kid isn't getting the knowledge, not understanding clases?

Which is more important :

A smart child who can run the family business

and care for in your dotage...

or

Saving face now vs the other families in the district...

Personally making the child learn effectively makes you GAIN face,

covering up for laziness is face losing, now and more importantly later in life.

Doubtful, since you repeatedly make excuses for some politicians corruption and declare it 'minor' etc.

But expecting you to be honest about your intentions and wishes was too much I suppose.

But it is quite amazing that they can be charged within 24 hours whilst the leaders of an arguably larger protest, the yellows, still have not been charged at all for taking over three International airports. I wonder if this is what is behind the absolute division in this country and until both sides are treated equally by the police and judiciary, rich poor or otherwise, is there any chance for Thailand to reach its potential?

Abhisit must make a firm and clear decision on this if he expects his "reconcilliatory" approach and "all people are equal in the eyes of the law" to be taken seriously.

Along with his assurances to international leaders that they would be secure for the ASEAN summit - Abhisits words and promises are sounding increasingly hollow.

:D ...another paper tiger rides again? will the rule of law apply to everyone, reds, yellows, blue and what-have-you? or even the thai north-south divide like in the banana republics worldwide? yes, abhisit some do something equittably...or will all hel_l break lose this time for thailand and see thousands die in the kingdom? looks like the time is nigh for anything... :D may justice prevail for once.. hopefully with no bloodshed .... :)

the anti-flooding protection is designed to prevent attacks to the database by robots .... "flooding" the server with posts. and possibly spam attacks and/or to help reduce double posts.

lobbyists indeed. others have been accused of far less, so untouchable hardcore lobbyists would be more apt.

Lobbyist –noun

a person who tries to influence legislation on behalf of a special interest;

a member of a lobby.

Origin: 1940–45; lobby + -ist

Related forms: lob⋅by⋅ism, noun

Random House Dictionary, © Random House, Inc. 2009.

So you are saying anti-Thaksin posters here work for whom?

You figure we are part of some grand English speaking cabal set in place to prevent Thaksin's return?

Are you assuming we are NOT individuals with grave concerns if Thaksin returns to the levers of power?

Are you saying we work for the Democratic party?

You think I work for Sondhi and Manager?

Why can you not assume we are just people greatly offended at the Thaksin PR machine's

infiltration of this forum for propaganda purposes.

Hardcore –adjective

1. unswervingly committed; uncompromising; dedicated: a hard-core segregationist.

2. pruriently explicit; graphically depicted: hard-core pornography.

3. being so without apparent change or remedy; chronic: hard-core inflation; hard-core unemployment.

Origin:1950–55

Based on the Random House Dictionary, © Random House, Inc. 2009.

I prefer 'Timeless' to chronic.

Dedicated, like to a worthy goal.

Unswerving, as in not swayed from reason.

Committed, as in hoping to not be confined to a asylum as punishment

if Thaksin comes back to take revenge,

as he so often has taken revenge on opponents in the past.

Yeah.

and then there's a smaller and even harder core of members such as mc2 and Koo82 who push their ideas or rather that of Thailand's greatest thief and mass murderer and thereby condemn any activities against said person, who is on the run from the law since quite some time and too coward to face his own people, yet remotely and with support of the money that he stole from the Thai people creates death and destruction in his home country.

Of course that can't be called "lobbying" because that guy was oh-so democratically elected and oh-so unlawfully deposed.....

dam_n i just saw a pig flying over my apartment and my camera battery is empty.

Lobbying to do what, exactly? Come to the streets and start a revolution? Sign a petition? Go and vote in a certain way?

Or is Mc2 saying that "we" have influnced his opinion to a degree where our posts break TV rules and qualify as lobbying?

Quickie om lobbying. While freeping of polls and targetting forum goes on and is big business in certain places, to think that targetting an expat board in Thailand even as popular as TV is worthwhile would be a tad silly imho. At the end of the day this whole mess is for the Thai people to sort out and the opinions of a bunch of expats is really not important in the grand scheme of things. Now the targetting of Thai blogs and newspapers and online polls that is much more productive,

In the meantime lets enjoy the normal debate, banter and name calling that we all love on TV :)
