The Mondeo has the Nissan SR20 engine in but the engine is too near the road for my liking. What would be the best way to raise the ride height?

Shocks?

Spacers?

Tyres? (tyres currently 195/60/15)

some other method?

TIA

Hello

Easist method would be to insert spring assisters, they are often used in cars carrying heavier loads to stop the coils in the spring closing together too much, and hence increasing your ride height.

If it's just the sump thats low to the ground, you can always shorten this. I've dont this a few times when putting engines into kitcars.

Or just take the springs off the struts and try to see if you can get longer ones or springs with a higher rate, means they are stiffer.

Hope that helps

Mondeos are very low to the gound as standard, i actually cracked a sump on one some years ago, albeit off road an off the beaten track so to speak. The wonders of Chemical metal !

The tyres your using now are relativly low profile, you can upgrade to 205 65 15 this would raise the car whilst avoiding a 4x4 look by raisng the springs.

If all else fails i would make a sumpgaurd to suit, even cheaper than tyres, if you want one PM me, the workshop i use is well equipped to knock one up for you

I must have been on planet Nowhere when these replies were posted :) Thanks for the replies though :D

Maybe I was away somewhere after posting.

I have a steel frame welded to the car to protect the sump. Good job I have one too. Banged that a few times over humps and bad dips in the road.

I'll look at getting spring assisters fitted or stiffer springs., but maybe larger tyres might be a better idea.

Would bigger rims be better or more problematic than simply adding bigger tyres?

I noticed today with 4 larger people in the car it 'grounded' on the sump frame more than usual :D

Try bigger tyre first!

If your always loaded up with 4 people and after fitting bigger tyres it still happens you will have to change the shock absorber and spring, if you just change the spring you will be bouncing down the road, the spring is matched to the shock as standard, when you put a stronger spring it will overcome the shock.

I would say 10 to 15 k bht to modify the front to bilstiens dampers and uprated springs, the same for the back.

If need any help let me know.

I don't wish to appear to be a wet blanket, but, isn't modifying standard vehicles the delight of the tea money police on the roads these days?

It would cost more than a hundred baht to get out of that one! :)

1. Put in spacers They costom made them in some mecanical workshop, cost about 2000 to 3000 Baht for all 4 springs. Do spacers, not higher than 2 inches. 2. Keep your wheels but use higher tires, I guess 205/75 / 15 for a Mondeo. With the spacers the car rides a little bit harder than usual, but if you put higher tires it will compense the harder ride and it will be soft as usual. Remember, the higher tires, the softer the ride.

But consider the speedo will no longer be accurate and your gearing will change with possible fuel mileage differences with larger tires.. But in this case you will be going faster then speedo reads...

Yeah, you will really stand out and be a target with a modified car in Thailand :)

I think it depends on what you do. I've never had a problem with lowering springs re the police. I don't think they like the coloured fog lights though! I would carry any necessary engineering certificates (clearnaces) for modded engines though..
