hi, i have a 1 year old husky and he is a very active dog runs around the garden and barks at everything and everyone (which is starting to annoy my neighbours (and me) now I have heard that if you nurture a dog he will become more quiet and relaxed. can anyone please tell me their experience with that?

thanks in advance

Topic title corrected.

I'm also interested in the responses on this. Our GR is well behaved except when there is a dog in heat within 500 meters of our place. My wife was against the idea but when he disappeared on us for 24 hours after I opened the gate to take him for a walk, is thinking it may be a good idea. However she brings up some points that concern me also. She believes he will become lazy, get fat and have a shorter life span. Any thoughts on that plus the OPs question on behavioral changes?

Hi, neutering your dog will not shorten his life span: running away and getting run over will!

As far as weight gain: you are in charge of the feeding, so again it is more an environmental issue. Neutering reduces urge to roam for females on heat, reduces intermale aggression ( up to a point). Reduces chances of prostatic and testicular cancer (they are gone).

It does not change the dog's temperament or behavior. Barking will not be controlled by this procedure.

I am a veterinarian and the only dogs that I have kept intact is my current one because i am showing her. But all my other dogs were neutered and spayed. Makes life a lot simpler keeping them. And it does not ad to the overpopulation.

So unless your dog has great breeding potential I would recommend you to neuter him.

Three males and one female all went under the knife. As stated, it didn't change temperament but has made things a bit easier to deal with. Highly recommended.
