applying for a single entry tourist visa to thailand in usa from an age 50+ us citizen. My stay is for 75 days. My understanding is the visa issued from thai consulate conducted by mail will be valid only 90 days from issue. Am I correct in understanding I must have it issued within 15 days of my actual departure?? Makes for a tight mail window if that is the case?

I do understand that it will grant me a 60 day stay on arrival and that I will need to contact immigration for an extension of the difference on arrival at the airport or later on bkk.

Thoughts? thanks

You can apply for your visa as early as 89 days before your arrival date in Thailand. The visa is valid for travel to (arrival in) Thailand within 90 days from its issue date. On arrival you receive permission to stay for 60 days. Towards the end of these 60 days – no need to wait until the last day – go to the local immigration office in Thailand and apply for a 30-day extension of stay, fee 1,900 Baht. This will cover your planned stay of 75 days.

I wouldn't send my passport by ordinary mail. Use priority mail with tracking, express mail, or Fedex/UPS.

Most honorary consulates turn around applications by mail the same day received.

The regular consulates or the embassy in DC (10 days) take longer and can make things difficult.

For a list of honorary conuslates use the pulldown menu at the top of this webpage.

For a single entry visa it is ok to get it early but as has been said not more than 89 days.
