After spending an hour trying to figure out why I had no connection to the internet after installing SP2 finally got the word that my Realtek RTL8139 drivers were not working correctly. As my driver is 3/31/08 and I believe the latest used system restore to get back on-line. People bad mouth system restore but the several times I have had to use it has been a lifesaver.

SP2 may not be ready for prime time!

I wasn't impressed with SP1 as it created more problems than it solved. I wish they would fix the stability problems in Windows Explorer and Media Player and the random shutdowns that happen in my laptop.

I have similar problems with Windows Explorer crashing on my laptop using Vista Home Premium 32-bit. It seems that after every startup, all of my system restore points are gone. I use Vista Home Premium 64-bit on my desktop computer and have experienced no problems at all. I'm quite sure that when I eventually upgrade to Windows 7, I will opt for the 64-bit version; hopefully it will be more stable, similar to the 64-bit Vista version.

I seldom, if ever, use Windows Media Player so I can't comment on it's reliability.

i just did a check for updates on my Vista Sp1 and it never mentioned I needed SP2? So why should I waste my time with this? Life is too short.

Actually Updates listed it for me last night. If you are not seeing it yet, you will soon.

I tried again - with latest network card driver - and again no network - and again restore to the rescue.

What NIC is it? And the driver is for what OS?

I am not even sure if the driver is the problem - but that was reported after trying to set up new network yesterday. I have no issues except for this update and it coming up with no access to internet after doing its thing (although I can log onto router nothing else can connect, browser/skype/utorrent). I did not spend any time on it today after the update did not seem to change anything.

It is an HP computer with Realtek RTL 8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC

Old driver was 61083312008

New driver is 611010292008

Driver is listed as for Vista 64 and Vista. Instruction sheet in download lists it for all Vista systems.

I'm not sure it will helps but maybe you try the following:

if you have downloaded that driver and it's an .exe file, Right Click ->Properties ->Compatibility and set that exe file to Vista Mode (without any SP) or even set to Windows XP (64) mode.

I had one time that problem after SP1 for Vista was coming and I had set the driver (was a NIC driver as well) to Vista Mode without SP. That was working for me.

Hope that helps.

Cheers.
