My recent annual check-up at Bangkok Christian Hospital found several lumps in my thyroid. Subsequent ultra-sound showed that one was 1.3 cm in diameter and possibly cancerous ( 5 - 10 pc chance of cancer doc says).

Subsequently I have had 2 biopsies (one normal, one ultra sound guided) but both samples turned out to be inadequate for analysis. The doc suggested that tumour removal might be the next course of action but wants to wait 6 months to see if the tumours grow in that time.

The lumps are so minor that personally I cannot detect them. My mother suffered from an overactive thyroid so maybe there is also a hereditary connection.

I would rather follow the docs advice and wait 6 months, but maybe I should panic and go to another hospital for a second opinion?

I am 56 year-old male.

Any advice would be welcome.

Multiple nodules are seldom cancerous.

Even if the FNB (fine needle biopsy) is inconclusive, it would probably be fine to wait another few months. The actual examination of the nodule can also give a clue as to its nature. Carcinomatous nodules are usually hard and clearly palpable.

Perhaps a second opinion would be in order but need not be done in a panic..

Best!

Thank you FBN on my FNB.

Maybe I will wait 3 months and get an interim ultrasound scan. 6 months does seem a long time to wait if the nodules are actually carcinomatous.
