Over recent weeks theres been posts slating Backpackers, Hippies, Sex Tourists, Package Tourists, Expats, Sexpats, English Teachers, Fat White Plonkers, Snobby RBSC members, Wannabe Snobby Golfers, Wannabe DJs (who DON'T have Green Door by Shakin' Stevens in their collections :o ), Americans, imaginary ex SAS Members, real ex SAS members and Camilla Parker Bowles.

Its left me wondering just what type of Westerner is the perfect Westerner for Thailand, and do they really exist? More importantly who amongst us fits the bill?

I'd say, anyone that's making a positive contribution to society.

- paying taxes, employing Thais, bringing money into the country would be the top of my list.

And not being 50 years old & screwing teenagers, basically.

What if they are paying taxes, making money for the company they work for by running an Export Dept, helping to create jobs for Thais plus plus......and screwing teenagers?

Then they're losers who are good for the economy.

Why are they losers?

And BTW, before the all the TV self-apointed moralists start wetting themselves, lets define teenagers regarding this topic....18 & 19 year old 'working girls' and 'willing students'...ok?

Well, as the saying goes, nobody's perfect.

Fair enough... I just think these guys are kinda sad but to each their own, it doesn't affect me one way or another.

Incidently, if my reply got you upset....

What if they are paying taxes, making money for the company they work for by running an Export Dept, helping to create jobs for Thais plus plus......and screwing teenagers?

Why did you ask?

If you don't like my replies, don't ask. I'm sorry if you expected high fives and a "good on ya" but that just ain't me.

I asked "why are they losers?"

I'm not up-set and dont need high fives from you, for sure!

I just expect a decent pay packet and a great life, which I'm getting...

Its left me wondering just what type of Westerner is the perfect Westerner for Thailand, and do they really exist? More importantly who amongst us fits the bill?

I think it's pretty simple, really. The perfect Westerner for Thailand is one who respects local customs and culture, learns the language, eats the food and generally makes a genuine effort to fit in. This type of foreigner helps to break down the cultural stereotype of the farang in Thailand and results in more of us being welcome.

It's an advantage to be contributing to the economy, but virtually everyone does that just by spending money here.

As for the comments about screwing (legal-age) teenagers - or screwing anyone, for that matter - I don't see any problem as long as it is done discreetly, as the Thais do it. In general, a Thai at the social level of the average Westerner would do his business in a massage parlour, hostess bar or hotel, and he wouldn't be seen dead walking down Sukhumvit with a tattooed hooker. It's all a matter of being careful what you do in public.

perhaps a person who really cares about other people ?

never mind if its a hooker or the waiter in the restaurant.. a person who tries at least to treat people equally and does not take advantage of others....

but i guess the same rules apply in any country?

i dont think anyone can be perfect all the time, but some make the effort and others clearly dont....

i dont think enjoying yourself with a willing partner every now and again should exlcude you from the list.. nor if you dont like to eat Thai food all the time or if you cant speak perfect Thai....

its your treatment of all other human being that will seperate you from the next guy at the end of the day....

amarka :o

I would say the best ones are the ones who do not come to Thailand to exploit people then go and tell all their mates in the Pub back home how easy Thai women are, and what great guys they are.

These guys seem to forget that they travel thousands of miles to go with prostitutes, then they boast about it like they are all of a sudden irresistable to women, ..............go figure that. :o

Perfect Westerner for Thailand? Odd concept :o From LoS point-of-view it'll be someone who puts into the country more than he takes out. Forget all that 'fitting in' crap, as someone said in another topic "you'll always be that farang no matter how much you try to fit in". As long as you don't tread on any toes then live your own life.

Yup.

I was walking thru Patpong at about 2pm one afternoon when the guy I was walking with pointed to one of the 'upstairs' bars and proudly said "You know, if you and I went in there now, all the girls would come to me".

For once, I was lost for words.

He must have had a 1000 baht note stuck to his forehead.

Anyone who is kind, courteous, respectful and adds dosh to the local economy. I dare say an English Gent is the best sort!!!  :o

Possibly this comment was in jest but in fact being kind, courteous and respectful seems to describe the ideal foreigner rather well.Until about the 1970's the "English gentleman" was a widely admired concept in Thailand though I suspect rarely encountered (not encountered in England these days either).I would add one other ingredient for the ideal foreigner here namely the capacity to be a "foreigner".Many farang are under the illusion that to speak Thai, to devour somtum and to enjoy luukthung etc make the Thais like and respect them.Completely wrong unless accompanied by the other virtues -kindness,courtesy and respect. The typical Bangkok based farang businessman, without much knowledge of Thai culture at all. is liked and respected by most Thais if he has these virtues.

Even in America we have an image of the kind, polite English gentleman in his fine clothes and bowler hat. The way you guys are going on here it's as if they are an endangered species. Why is that?

well, james bond was a classic example, a dying breed english gentleman and whorist at the same time :o
