If this is in the wrong spot, sorry. Given how long the present rules have been in place, should travel agents be telling tourists what their options are? I have an American friend who has just arrrived to see his in laws with wife and kids. He was gob smacked when I told him if he crosses a border by land /sea he gets 15 days. He normally does 6 months in Thailand and 6 months in the US so the old old 30 day rules suited him fine.

Interestingly immigration at VTBS told him the rules may change for "special" cases soon.

On request, a travel agent should be able to tell a client the visa requirements for the trip for which the agent sells him a ticket.

He may not of used a travel agent. A travel agent might not be aware of all the rules anyway unless they took the time to check.

This is one the reason we always suggest getting a visa if you plan on staying more than 30 days.

The old rules would not of done him that much good because he would of gone up against the 90 day rule if he was staying 6 months.

If he is married to a Thai he can go to immigration and get a 60 day extension to visit his wife.

After that he could go to a consulate and get a free tourist visa that would give another 3 months by extending the 60 day entry for 30 days or he might even be able to get another 60 extension instead of 30.

The daft thing is my friend receives the TV news letters, but hardly ever browses the forum. I suggested that at the very least he should read this section.
