Hi,

We have found ourselves to have 2 spare days (after a wedding) this wknd in Surat Thani. Can anyone recommend a nice place to stay nearby? We dont really want to travel too far from the airport. Any area which has a nice hotel/beach/pool in the region of 50GBP per night would be good, also somewhere which wasn't too quiet i.e. restaurants and shops nearby.

We dont normally travel South as we live in Bangkok so not sure of the area. I read a previous post about Sichon, would anyone recommend it?

Many thanks :)

i always stay at the Wang Tai in Suratani. Clean nice people, a fairly good resturaunt with an excellent breakfast. Night has singers in the resturauntand quite good food cheap. There is a Kareoke club there too if you like night life. About 800 baht a night double with breakfast.

Pleasant walk along the riverfront 50 metres away.

Thai airways flight crew stay there so it is probable you could go to the airport in the hotel minibus with them

Has a fairly good swimming pool.

It is one of the few realatively wheelchair friendly hotels in Thailand though the only independantly accessible entrance is at the back of the hotel

If you prefer somewhere more natural, then there are plenty of places in Sichon and close by Khanom/Nai Plaow beach ares.

The accomodation at Khanom is OK'ish and Sichon has more of a cove/mediterranean feeling to it which I would prefer if I was staying. I'm afraid I can't remember the names of any resorts/bungalows in Sichon but I would imagine that you would be hard pressed to pay more than 1500b a night tops as there are no Thai holidays and there should be alot of vacant rooms. Just walk in and book directly at reception.

The beach is lovely and surrounding countryside quite lush with a coastline of unknown beaches stretching for miles and miles. It's an interesting little town with a thriving fishing industry, but two nights will be enough there if you don't have friends staying as there aren't really any foreigners there or foreign owned cafes etc. (That's if you would like to meet other westerners of course!)

Thanks very much for your feedback :)

Khanom has a little more going on than Sichon I think. You'll be a little isolated in the hotels (no nearby shops, restaurants, etc) if you go to Sichon. Nai Plao Beach in Khanom has about 6 restaurants and about 5-6 hotels/bungalows ranging from 600 Baht at One More Beer restaurant (great Thai food and pizza) and hotel - up to 1000-2000 baht at the bigger Supar Hotel and other hotels in the area. The beaches are beautiful, you might even see some pink dolphins! And if you have a car there's small waterfalls, other restaurants, markets, etc... Have fun!

I was last in Khanom in April and One more beer was kind of closed and/or up for sale. What has happenned there, what's the latest? What about Kula Bula bar, did the owner come back from India yet?

And what about CC bar, is Charlie still doing his thing?

One More Beer was rented out for awhile - they are now open for food after 4pm until the "high season" starts, there's usually a thai lady (that speaks English) in the office there all day though - to rent rooms, motorbikes and such. (It is still for sale though) Kula Bhula is closed, I think the owner is still away. CC Bar is still there!
