I suggest you look at the results of the last 2 by-elections and see who the real voters chose. Maybe the electorate will see through Abhisit's smiling facade, and discover that it's the same old ruling elite really pulling the strings. I might have more faith in Little Mark if he wasn't surrounded by some of the worse possible cronies - Newin, Kasit et al.

Poll: PM gains high support

BANGKOK, 8 August 2009 (NTT) - A poll shows people in majority still want Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to continue his job, while seeing Police Chief, Police General Patcharavat Wongsuwan has the utmost tolerance to withstand political pressures.

Assumption University's ABAC Poll Research Center today reported its latest public's opinion survey toward a recently dispute between politician leaders and police chief over reportedly attempt to remove him from his post.

The report said 77.4% of the respondents believed politicians are most beneficiaries from the police resshuffles while only second to politicians are high-ranking police officers with 76.4 percentage points.

About 73% said they are giving full support for the prime Minister to continue his work, while 69.6% of respondents cautioned the Premier to be cautious about decision's making in order to avoid unintended mistakes the other previous Prime Ministers had done.

In regard to stand against pressures from politicians, Pol.Gen.Patcharavat was given 7.23 out of 10 points for his tolerance against political pressures while getting 7.09 points for his compromise to lessen social conflict.

Most people suggested the Prime Minister to speedily bring about merit system in awarding promotion for police officer based solely on their performances and as well as set up independent panel to overhaul organization's structure of the police.

People support PM Abhisit

Even though Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva seemed to have conflict with the police chief, most people wanted him to continue working to settle the country’s pressing problems, according to a Abac Poll released on Saturday.

A recent opinion poll on conflict between political camp and police chief Pol Gen Phatcharawat Wongsuwan by Assumption University found that 73 per cent of the respondents gave moral support to Mr Abhisit to continue performing duties.

The thing is, that Thaksin would win handily if you bothered to put him on the list - the same problem that the powers that be have in a real election.

Abhisit seems to be the clear choice of Thaivisa posters, although not of this expat. However, if he thought he was the clear choice of Thai voters we would already have had a new election. Since he is stalling as long as possible before holding an election he most likely feels he would lose at this time.

The fact is that the last three elections held in this country the party, under whatever name, supported or led by Thaksin has got the most votes. It is likely, but unprovable, that if another election was held now the same result would be the result.

The current government got in power because, under military pressure, the Thai court system removed a significant number of Thaksin-supporting MP's.

Most Thaivisa posters seem to feel, like the Bangkok elite many posters associate with, that rural Thais are too stupid and uneducated to decide who should run the country. Do they feel the same about the democracies most of them come from? Are only college graduates allowed to vote in the UK? Must you pass an IQ test to vote in France? Are only white people allowed to vote in America?

Is Abhisit perfect? No. Is Thaksin perfect? No. Is any Thai politician perfect? Absolutely no. In a democracy the voters make a choice and the country lives with the result. A country where the military can veto an election result is not a true democracy.

Because there are some of us who permanently live here and derive our income from Thailand. Politics affects our business, and our lives arguably much more so than it might in some other countries.

We can not vote, so why not voice our opinions about it in a public forum, it's not going to change anything directly but it doesn't cause any harm either.
