Broadband access at home

Featured Replies

I have recently moved into an apartment on Sathorn Soi 7 and need to get broadband access ASAP - after 2 years of cable modem access in Singapore dialup is killing me!!  ???

Any suggestions / tips to do with providers or telephone company issues would be most appreciated. Does anyone know the deal with UBC - can it also act as a cable internet provider?

Thanks in advance.

Presently broadband options are very limited in Thailand.  There are some cable modem / DSL trials going on in Bangkok; check the major service providers (i.e. CS Internet, Loxinfo, etc.) if their trial covers your area.  Failing that, your next option is satellite-based internet.  I'm currently using Turbo Internet by CS.  It uses a modem / phone line for outbound traffic, and a satellite dish for inbound traffic (about 256kbps).  So downloading is fast, but uploading is slow.  Generally this isn't a problem since 90% of the time you're downloading anyway.  My plan is 1,500 baht per month.  I have also used iPStar service by CS, which is a 2-way satellite system, 128kbps outbound and 256kbps inbound.  I do not recommend this setup, as it is expensive (17,000 baht per month), and the quality of service and support is poor.  But if you need high-speed outbound, there's not much choice.  Leased lines are also available, but last time I checked were prohibitively expensive.
